Good thought, Focker, this was a common practice when removing any tapered coupling on turbines and electric motors using hydraulic pullers. "Old school engineeering...today they'd use a plastic zip-tie."- PeteL more like a dab of adhesive, Pete, LOL
Not to be an English Nazi, google "swedge" Good luck and Merry Christmas to all !

In my Oxford English Dictionary (the ultimate reference), swedge is a variant of swage at least as far back as 1825. It also can be the name of the chisel or tool used.

Thats one of those really irritating hub/drum assemblies. As stated above, the studs are swedeged onto the hub. This video is for a D41, but the process is similar

What I don't understand is why they sometimes put the drum on the inside. Undoubtedly the studs have to be removed to do anything with the drum. I was taught to use a BFH and the proper support to remove studs.

That was the factory manual technique on my F-350. But those studs were splined only, not swaged (or swedged).

As far as I know, all the D41s are like that.
