Yup, I can tell a good weld from a bad weld by the sounds it's making...

thanks Chuck - maybe boxing in the front frame rails would be a good project....I definitely think I need to 'adjust the settings' more to get a better feel for how that changes things....I've been hesitant to move too far away from the 'suggested' settings on the machine chart.

when i was taught - I was told it should sound like frying bacon....now I see what my problem is....:)

    Mmmmmm... Bacon... :drool;

aallison 74 cj6, 76 cj5. Has anyone seen my screwdriver?

I was told angry bees. But I like bacon better.

Practice, practice, practice. Post up some more picts after running a bead and we can look at them.

Just did that on Jim's 3b for his steering before leaving town for a week or so... the 'stick time' even on TIG is important. When I moved to TIG from stick, the hardest part was teaching my hand not to 'burn down' as I welded :drool; - TIG was easier as it's just an 'electric' version of 'gas' welding

TIG welding is just fun...

But MIG is just so easy... :bananatool:

    Now Heliarc...

From my understanding, Linde invented GTAW, (TIG) and used only helium for shielding gas. They trademarked it "HeliArc". I do know that some of the tings i work on are very specific to the process of "Heliarc" welding for the design sheets. Also in my understanding, helium as a shielding gas can produce better penetration with its better shielding characteristics. Since I have no firsthand knowledge of this, its just conjecture on my part.

TIG . nothing is better for aluminum
requires a steady hand . well two of them .
all of my industrial welding over the years . I've always been a two hander . one to hold stinger and the other to hold my control hand steady
this applied to all my welding . stick . mig . flux core . and all was position welding . flat /overhead /vertical /round

This the only way I can even remotely make my welding look anything remotely acceptable. Good position, good bracing, seated if I can and relaxed with 2 hands while not breathing and other times remembering to.

You learn something every day...

I'm still not good at it...

  12. I agree completely. That's why I say I'm an electron relocation specialist rather than "a welder'. To me, the machine is the welder. You need to watch the flow. Speed of movement is better maintained by watching the wet puddle.

Take a welding class at the local community college.
I’m doing that now and and am glad I am.
Figured I could learn more in 30 hours there than trying to self teach

I did the same. It was a great way to learn things faster. The only downside is not many community colleges have trade-type classes anymore. There were 4 community colleges closer than I went to, but none of them had welding classes.
