Rubber Fender Flares

Has anyone tried these style fender flares. Not made of plastic but rubber like the original ones for jeeps.

I put something like those on my 70 model back in the early 80s.....they are still on and have not torn or came loose. I can see no downside to having them....

 

Back in 71 when I bought mine J C Whitney sold some material that also came in a roll for making your own fender flares. I doubt they still sale it anymore, but don't know. I still have them on and there still in great shape after all these years. The reason I really like theirs was it is made of real rubber, not like the later on factory ones that were really stiff and more like plastic or something. On mine your can rub against a tree or something and it will not hurt them at all and they just pop right back out. Also the other reason I really liked them is the way you installed them, they came with a roll of 3/4" wide steel band. The flares would fit against the outside of the fender and the band would go on the inside of the 1/2" lip and you just ran screws through both flare and the band underneath of them and it clamped it to that 1/2" lip. You did not have to drill any holes in the fender and there are no screws showing.

 

This material should still be available at trailer or tow-truck supply stores. The first flares for CJs back in ca 1972 were made from this generic material. Its main issue is how to fasten it and keep the fasteners from telegraphing through the fenders as pucker marks. The plastic molded flares are easier because the more rigid edges hold their shape against the (nominally hidden) fasteners.

Could call a truck up fitter our service truck has rubber flares pretty close to that. I can get the brand and pics if intrest.

 

That is the same material I used on my 3B. It's probably been on there for a couple of decades. It worked really well on the rear, not so well on the front.
