What seems wrong about it? It's a U-shifter, and the location wrt the transmission stalk looks ok to me. It has two shifter switches, which seems 230ish to me. IIRC they had a TC indicator panel on the dash. I'll see if I can find anything about that. Group 18.

That design is called a "J" shifter .
IMHO it's the best design D20 shifter that Jeep ever used.
IMHO IH used a superior factory twin stick assembly on some D20's from this same era.

I recently built a D20 just like this with park brake assembly, Tera Low gears and used the IH factory win sticks.
I'll be bolting it to a Jeep T18.

My bad, I meant the design of the handle. Seems it should curve back and up. Been years since I had one.

Tim what t-case does your J-10 have?

Well, "J" or "U", both are made-up names to describe that type of shifter with the control box. Both are in common usage. Jeep does not have a name for it, AFAIK. Modern owners think they are troublesome because they are nearly always worn out.

Dana 20, but no indicator lamps. Apparently those were only present on 230-232-327 cars, and maybe only Wagoneers. Hard to be any more specific from the parts book.

Not much you can conclude from the shifter handle shape...

I agree, certainly not conclusive. The main thing I remember is the single lever design being inconvenient due to location versus the dual lever. Also the location dictated the more curved back handle.

I called the seller, no answer. Left a message. That's all I can do for now. If we are able to reach an agreeable price; I will add this to my parts hoard and post pics/casting numbers up here for reference.

Seller was a super nice old guy. Transmission and transfer case both shift nice.

    Prooved me wrong.
I thought it was a T98 for sure.

I'll look up the part number but it appears to be from around the 1964 timeline.

Input shaft is 1-1/8" 10 spline. Steps down to 1.120" after the splines. Looks like it would be pretty easy to have my brother chop and respline the input. The .005 difference would likely never be noticed.

Opening it up. Some minor rust, nothing that wont be polished off after a few miles.
The input is 17 tooth. Would that indicate A 6.32 first gear? If so, will this short input drop in?

As I recall, only the CJs got the close-ratio T-18, so every J-series will be 6.32 (wide ratio). Yes, 17 tooth is wide ratio. Also, I understood the 6.32:1 Ford input will fit any of the wide ratio Jeep T-18s.

From my notes. This implies the above Ford gear will work fine.

    Thanks Tim!
I was nervous buying this setup after reading plenty of horror stories trying to make long input shaft models work. Should be a simple install and bearing retainer machining.

I checked out the e brake pivot stud, it is intact and the e brake functions properly. Here are a couple overall pics for you guys.
Next step is to drain the oil, flush with diesel and fill to the brim with some used hydraulic oil. Just prepping for long term storage.

Make sure you put this in a plastic tub if your filling to the brim with old hydraulic oil. Like almost all Jeep transmissoin /TC assys, it will leak!
