What could it be? Better question is - What exactly is it?

I don't have much better description than in the title. Except might sound like a very dry bearing about to completely explode. The noise does continue when out of gear coasting to a stop then quiets as I go slower than about 5mph.

Does it only do it if the clutch pedal is pushed in or even when it's out? Possibly throwout bearing comes to mind.

So not there while the drive train is under load but is there when coasting...

When coasting does it change any if you put it in gear but with the clutch in?

Screech with clutch in or out, in gear or not in gear.

The clutch and bearing are new - about 700mi.

I really don't think so. Doesn't seem to be internal transmission.

Can you post a video of the sound?

Well, we all know that new sometimes only means new, but if it quits it doesn't seem like the throwout bearing is the culprit.

Also, check the rear wheels to see if one of them is getting hot- you may have grabby brakes locking up one wheel when it's not being driven.

Have you listened for under the hood noises? Alternator?

I'll need a passenger to help with this. But since there wasn't a quick clear answer I'll check this.

Noise does not change with engine RPM. Like - screeching and put in neutral and rev engine = no difference in noise.

But have you ruled out under the hood noise or is it just hard to tell where it's coming from?

My bet is pinion bearing. Under power it’s pushing against one, under coast it’s pushing against the other.

How’s the oil level in the rear?
Any play in the pinion? Up/down/in/out?

Yes! Check for play in the rear output that would allow that to happen.

Or nuts coming loose and letting it wobble at all.

I had a horrible squeal when downshifting. Turned out to be a loose fan belt.
