0FBD70C9-4399-4463-98AC-258E9AADEDA8.jpeg Got up under the Jeep today after watching a video about changing the oil in the differentials, figure I need to change all the fluids since I don’t know the jeep’s history...also I’m the “ignorant mechanic”, ha. Anyway, I found the tags on the difs indicating the gearing of 4.27. Now the build sheet I got from the PO makes sense. The form has 5.38 preprinted in the differential area, but it is x’d out with a typewriter and 4.27 is typed in beside the marked out ratio...interesting. Ray

One of my problems, not knowing much in this area, is figuring out what products to use ... lubricants ... seems like everybody is using something different. Is the shop manual a good way to go, or are there better, more modern lubricants? And parts, all the repro stuff seems “substandard” to me, so is it a constant hunt for NOS parts?

Many of the Jeep reproduction parts are indeed of dubious quality :(

Novak, nos, then other made in USA.
    Avoid anything important from overseas.
The modern lubricants have some issues with old technology
    Brake fluid
    Gear oil
    Antifreeze
    Engine oil
Stick to the factory published lubes except. Knuckle pudding, and engine oil will need to be higher in zinc than what you normally use for the tappets.(someone please chime in here) I haven't gotten to changing that yet.

Not to start a ‘what oil is best’ war, but I am running Rotella T4 engine oil; says it works in both diesel and gas motors but has higher zinc (ZDDP) content than regular oil. Good for the tappets in the ole F-head, at least that’s what I tell myself.

    My diffs get Valvoline 80W-90.

Make sure what you use doesn’t eat up the brass in the old transmission (this is what I’ve been told ).

I run Amalie 15w40 diesel oil in all my flat tappett engines higher zinc. In the gear oil dept it’s 85w90 out of a five gallon bucket from the flaps with Lucas oil treatment. Have base for years with no I’ll effect.
