It's super simple to take the axle shaft out. Only way you will know what the problem is.

yeah, i'm mr. mom from 4:30 pm till 11pm with a 2 year old so getting out and working on the jeeps have been hit and miss since my daughter was born. I'm ordering a new bearing and seal regardless of what I find when it gets taken apart the rest of the way. If I have to I can always take the shaft out of the other axle if this one is not right.

So I bought the crown automotive kit that Fino got in his build thread but mine did not come with any papers stating the minimum that the axle can be. does anybody have a stock size the axle is supposed to be?

can you clarify what size measurement you are after? diameter or length etc?

The manual referenced previously has info for the collar in a note on the bottom of page 33.

so reading the service manual the only lube this bearing gets is what is put in the bearing at install then later in life you pull axle out a tad and put some grease in there. so now i wonder if the guy put enough grease in there during install

If you're thinking that's the problem I personally doubt it. My guess is a problem with the collar. Maybe it moved on the shaft? Was the shaft scored maybe or the collar was not in specs?

Took me a bit to find it again....I knew I'd seen it there. :D

so took out the shaft today and the bearing is seated all the way and so was the collar. the bearing moves in and out quite a bit on the inner race so assuming the bearing is shot. The retainer plate was pretty dished so glad i had gotten the kit. got it all removed from the shaft and installed the new plate and bearing this morning. going to put a bunch of grease in the bearing and reinstall in the morning.

the shaft diameter was good and so is the i.d on new collar. no unusual marks. hopefully this will take care of this issue. i didn't know those plates were serviceable thought you only were able to just pound it back flat, turn it around and hope for the best.

I can't picture how a bearing could move side to side like that, especially what you showed, unless it was coming apart? Anyway glad you got it fixed.

I am still feeling like a tapered bearing got used instead of the correct unit bearing....hope you have it all sorted.

We need pics, it would really help to understand what was bad.

Pulled my axles out for my rear disc brake conversion. There was no in/out movement on the brake drum when the tire was removed and the brake drum was pulled. Set a gauge up to see how much the axle pulled out, see picture. Took pictures of axles out. The race, in the axles housing moves in and out, just by pushing it with your finger. There is a step in the housing which will limit the movement of the race. I had the rear diff re-geared and rebuilt about 3 years ago, it has about 25 miles on it.

is that aluminum tape on the race?!?

I didn't take any pictures of the bearings on the axle when it was removed. the bearing was sloppy on the inner race. Nothing like the new bearing. The retainer plate was pretty distorted so some of the play could have been from that along with the bearing slop. The outer race that was in the axle itself came right out nicely with a 3 jaw puller attached to a slide hammer. I still have that and will take a picture of it and post it along with the retainer plate.

Yeah I'm sure it was the right bearing put in there. Looked just like the one that got installed except the old bearing was a national bearing and now it has a timken set in there. Well almost in.
