Paint & Trim Codes Identification

On a CJ5 with a serial number slightly higher than the last June 1967 number, which presumably makes it a very early 1968, can the paint & trim tag numbers be decoded, which are 999 and 221? Thanks.

    From the parts book
    221 GSA Gray (16440) ACME Lacquer 1723 Enamel 22-1723
"Paint or trim option 999 designates special paint or trim, therefore the vehicle serial number should be supplied."

How much higher is slightly higher? 10 units, 100 units 1000 units? You are talking about 2 months of production which could be 1000s of units.
The paint code of 999 denotes a special paint color that could mean a fleet color. The trim code refers to the interior seat upholstery material and color. I would have to refer to my parts manual to see what trim 221 is.

Is GSA a normal designation or is that for government?

My understanding is the 999 code is a paint code, thus 221 would be the trim. If so, 221 as the gray fleet color is not correct. Also it is very unusual for these tags to survive, since they were printed on foil and glued to the passenger side firewall. The glue dries out and they fall off on their own, even if not removed or painted over when repainting.

I also understood that GSA Gray is a fleet color, and the GSA stands for General Services Administration of the US Federal Govt. I presume it's a standard gray that's set out by the GSA for their fleet vehicles. Every year there are several fleet colors that can be ordered in addition to the regular product colors.

I think Tim and the others are correct that is is a fleet code but 221 is the paint code, 999 is a special trim code.
I do not see code 221 in the paint charts from 67 or 68 or any other years in matter of fact, that is why I think it might be a fleet color and like Tim said probably GSA
The example Tim showed is " Butterscotch Gold" See below

    No 221 trim code listed.

Both plates are well preserved. The VIN plate on the right cowl reads: Jeep
    8305014 248529
    Kaiser Jeep Corporation
    Toledo Ohio

The left cowl plate, painted over but the embossed numbers very legible is: 999 221

    Does this help??

My post above is in regards to ordering parts or anything special that would relate to the tags, way back when.\.
Of course, the factory records of what was what pertaining to 999 are long gone.
    Unless you have original paperwork.

Not doubting Jim, but if it's the same embossed label that I showed above, and it reads "999 221" I would expect the paint code to be first, on the left.

Look under the dash or some other hidden place - you might get an indication of what the original color was. GSA Gray would have been a medium gray, nothing really mysterious there. In my '74-80 book, 221 is "Federal Gray." The original color may be evident somewhere on the Jeep. Any hints that it was an agency vehicle? I'd expect that 999 trim would not be something your typical dealer could order up, unless it was a special package meant for local delivery of an agency vehicle, or such.

    No worries.....
We all know that the factory books have been wrong, past and present.

The 999 is the paint code and was actually fairly common, though it could be any number of colors. An example is the Renegade l and ll models all have a 999 paint code. That could be orange, lime, yellow, blue, and possibly others, but they are all 999 denoting a "special color".
I will be home this weekend and can likely find the color and fabric pattern for 221 in my books.
Folks looking at 221 as a paint color are on the wrong track, and it is only coincidence that 221 is also a paint code for gray. I stand by my comments in post#3.

I had a brain fa%t and Donny is correct the 999 is the paint code. Should have thought more about it because on the tags the first number is shown as the paint code and second as the trim code. Guess age is catching up with me and I get confused now and then.

Here is a paint chart showing the 999 code for my RII that matches the tag on my firewall.

Mike, thanks for posting up the 999 colors! I knew I wasn't crazy.
I got my parts books out and Group 31-07A lists trim codes. Sorry, but 221 isn't found in my book. 200, 201, 224, 225, etc but not yours. I might dig out any earlier book.
