Transmission Whine

Some is exhaust leak and some is valve tapping. I adjusted them but it made no difference.

On another note I got a timing light from my neighbor and checked it, it was off by almost half an inch. Before I checked it I took a q-tip and a little white paint to highlight the little crimp in the pulley (timing mark) made it much easier to see while checking. Strangely enough the motor does not smoke nearly as bad now that the timing is at 5deg. It was at about 18 to 20 before. Engine is still running a touch rich but better than before adjusting the timing. I also don’t have to pull the choke to start it every time now.

Sounds like a combination of gear whine and bearing noise to me. Input, output, main shaft, counter shaft maybe? Noise seems too rough to just be gear whine. In the t-case the intermediate shaft is notorious for going bad which luckily is the easiest to check.

When you are in third gear, the transmission goes straight through, no gears are working, so it is not trans gear noise, it has got to be a bearing or Transfer Case noise. I had a wow, wow, noise in my transfer case on downhill deceleration, I put a Novak kit in my Jeep and now I can slow my Jeep down on a hill and it works a lot better, and no wow, wow, noise. Good luck

To the OP, what are you hoping to learn from this discussion? There is not much you can do to the transmission with it in the Jeep. Have you taken the top off?

R&R of transmission and transfer case in a CJ is pretty easy. Lots of room underneath, the components are not that heavy, and there are several strategies for supporting the components while extracting. There are things you can do to the transfer case with it in the Jeep, but I would just pull it and work on the bench.

Have you given this a try?

Just keep the hubs unlocked and take it around he block in third gear low range.

I'd pull the top cover, easy enough to do and have an eyeball on the transmission gears and general condition of everything. Note if the transmission fluid has silvery flecks in it. Drain it and scope it all out. Pry up and down as best you can on shafts and note any play. Do the gears look rounded from grinding? I would bet on it being xcase related though, but you can be more confident in the transmission once you get a look at it. I believe I have a barely used transfer case Novak intermediate shaft and bearings you can have for price of shipping.( I bought the Advance Adapters kit)Pull transfer case pan down and pry the middle gear all which ways. If it moves around, Bob's your uncle. ( I really wanted to use that phrase today). Push up and down on your output shafts. If there's movement, adjust or replace the bearings.

I put it in Low and not change. I am leaning towards input shaft bearing on the front of the transmission.

I also drained out the transmission oil. All gears and synchros look good
