I am planning on installing a rear pto and gear box for my 61' CJ5. Is it necessary to install the extra reinforcing c- channel to the rear cross member before installing the gearbox on the rear crossmember?

This is sold at Walck's to fit inside rear crossmember to stiffen it. Some of the old literature I have run across and read mention using this in some of the agrijeeps.

    Description
Our own reproduction of the rear cross member reinforcement brace that was used on models with PTO and machinery bolted on the back cross member. The channel fits all CJ models 1945-1975 and fits FC 150 models 1957-1964. Some holes must be drilled due to early and late cross member holes. Nice reproduction.

Note: on 1972-1975 models additional holes must be drilled for the fuel tank.

    1 Required per Jeep.

Always thought those were stock, not an option. Are you sure you don't have one already?

Most every Jeep from at least the mid-60's and earlier has the doubled rear crossmember between the frame rails. Many of the replacement rear crossmembers do not have this additional reinforcement, but some of the better ones are reinforced (like Midwest Military).
Your '61 should already have the reinforcement unless the crossmember has been replaced with a non-original one. Closely examine the largest hole in your crossmember (for the PTO shaft) to see if the crossmember is two layers thick.

My 3As don't have it, but my CJ5 does. It is a rust rust trap, I would leave it out if you don't have it.
