Correct Compression For '62 Cj-5 F134

    My compression readings: #1 = 106, #2 = 106, #3 = 105, #4 = 109

    Too low, or just fine?

    Not too bad for a used f-head. The good news is that they are all very close to the same.

    I agree about the even numbers. I wonder if rebuilding would help the power output?

    It's an F-head. What power output?

    New would be in the range of 120-125, bad would be 80-90. If you're not burning oil I'd drive like I stole it.:D

    Howard, it spills oil, it doesn't burn it ;-) I was checking the oil canister to see if it had a filter inside (so I could order a new one), and didn't get the gasket straight, it got oil EVERYWHERE, all over the engine, even in the passenger compartment.

    Perhaps I should start a new thread, let me know if I should, but I'll try this here: I found some old threads on replacing the carb (I have a Solex) with a Weber 32/36, or changing the ignition or doing both to get more power. I know "power" is not really the word, but I'd like to get 50-55mph up one of our 3-4% grades. I was doing 45mph the other day.

    Cruising at 45mph is just right for an F-head, as frequently discussed here. They were intended for off-road applications and their design precludes any easy power upgrades.

    Hell, I have trouble getting 55mph out of my '88 YJ, on any noticeable uphill. Jeeps have the aerodynamics of a brick.

    Make your second Jeep a V6 and use that one on the highway.

    Blew a cartridge filter clean off my M-715. Rustproofed that engine bay! And twenty years later you can still see the stain on the side of the house.

    Valves checked?

    They seem close.
