Which Carburetor For F134

I just picked up a '56 with the F134 engine. It came with three carbs in the floorboard and I wanted an opinion for either the Zenith or Carter to rebuild and use.

    Here are the carbs

I'm going to vote for a top quality rebuild on a Carter YF.

Carter YF is original. The Zenith may work well, but you'd need to work it out yourself. There are new aftermarket Solex carbs available for this engine, which are said to work well.

If you look through old posts, there should be a the proper Carter numbers for this engine given. IMO the YF will work fine if it is properly rebuilt. They wear out, and can need some work (rebushing), but a competent carb shop can fix them up.

The Carter YF would be my choice

I'll recommend the Carter too. Notice it also has the correct top tapered flange for the top air cleaner elbow to make the correct connection.

Both of my F 134's have the Carter, both do what they are supposed too.

So, are the zenith carburetors worth anything?

Maybe. They used to be popular for hot-rodding air cooled VWs.

An overly worn out Carter is a really annoying battle. A good one is not only an awesome running carb, but original equipment. It took me quite a few before I found a decent one, though.

I’m also a big fan of the Solex.

    No XP with a Zenith

Carter YF. Ran a solex for a bit. But once I put the rebuilt Carter YF on I noticed a difference in how the engine ran and performed.

A worn throttle shaft can be re-bushed, which fixes any air leakage there.

Price a rebuild kit for the Carter and/or having your Carter rebuilt and then price a new Solex replacement.

My experience is that it wasn't worth screwing around with a worn out Carter YF. I did 2 YF rebuilds myself and then had it professionally done and it still ran like crap. $100 and 10 minutes install time on the Solex and I was golden.

$22.81 Rockauto YF Kit (including shipping)
    $32.00 Amazon Chem-dip (no shipping - Prime)
$ 4.00 Amazon Gumout Carb and Choke Cleaner 16 oz (no shipping - Prime)

$58.81 Total cost assumes you do it yourself and it doesn't need to be rebushed

$107.00 Solex for Jeep F-head on eBay ($95 plus $12 shipping

It will cost you over half the cost of new Solex - which will work - to rebuild the YF which may work

Or you can do it like I did and do both. :D

I have a machine shop at my disposal and I know a guy with a sonic tub! Plus I am a glutton for punishment. I will bush the shafto_O and see what happens.

While 100% true, the Solex #JustWorked. I just had a bad run of Carters (my first 4 were all trash). I had immediately good results from a Solex. Then I finally got a good Carter, so I can finally say I see where you guys are coming from.

Would I go through the hassle of having it rebuilt.. not unless OEM is important to the build. If I had the equipment and liked doing the work? Sure, I’d rebuild it right. Otherwise Solex do the job quite well. I’ve still not had a FHead run as well as that Solex’d 65 I had last year.
