Gas Tank Sending Unit

got this jeep as a project and have been fixing it up, it has the v6 dauntless with the gas tank under the driver seat, it came with a new tank but no sending unit, the new tank has a 6 bolt pattern where the sending unit goes,, and a nut on top for the wire i take it for the gas gauge , can anybody point me in the right direction for the right sending unit

There were two tank styles, depending on the year. Early style uses screws. The later style used a lock ring and is probably what your Jeep had originally (it would help to put year/model/equipment in your sig - then it's present for each post). The only steel tank available is the early type, AFAIK. MTS makes a plastic tank for both styles. Depending on how particular you are, you could use the tank you have or buy a different one. MTS COMPANY, L.C. - Jeep CJ/YJ Gas Tanks The sender for the tank with screws does not have any plumbing for gas pickup and sometimes return, which the later type does. Look at the pictures on the MTS site. The early type for the four cylinder takes fuel from the bottom of the tank, IIRC.

NB MTS says 55-72 for the under-seat tanks when it should be 55-70ish. And their note to the 0050 tank should include the 70ish-71 under-floor tanks for those years.

 

When I got mine ( fits an aftermarket gauge), they offered 2 , different ohm values, just had to match with value of gauge?

 

All of the V6 Jeeps I have seen used the locking ring style tank. The sending unit has two tubes in it one for fuel supply and one for return.

 

there's no tubes coming from the sending unit,no locking ring just 6 holes to screw down, just a nut for the wire on top, iam guessing is for the fuel gauge

 

I was able to adapt the V-6 sending unit to the early style 6 hole mounting by making some metal rings with hole saw and notching flange on sender to align with holes in tank. You will need a extra gasket.Worked great.

 

My ‘67 v6 had the six hole sending unit and it’s the original tank. My Jeep was built in Canada though. Maybe it makes a difference?

 

My 66, V 6 donor Jeep had the 6 screw sending unit in it. It feeds out the bottom of the tank, like a 134 F head, does not have a suction line out the top.

 

I know that 69-70 had the sender held in by a lock ring...not sure about prior to that. However, I see no reason why you couldn't use the six screw sender and hook up the fuel line to the bottom of the tank.

 

My 71 has the underseat fuel tank that PO installes as a second. The under seat tank has the six hole sending unit. I got my sending unit from Walcks. I odrdered a 1964 sending unit (becuase the tank/sending unit looked like my previous 64 CJ5) and it works perfect with the gauge PO installed for it.
