Operation Finish Dreams Cj-6

It's been over 11 years since my dad started and stopped the rebuild on a 1957 CJ-6. When we started it I was around 7. Now I'm 18 and finishing highschool and have been inspired to complete the rebuild with my dads help for my senior project. Since I decided to do it for my senior project I'm on a time crunch so I have about 2-3 months to complete the Jeep! Pictures will come as I work through it! Earlier pictures of when my dad first bought the Jeep could be hard to find but If I find any I'll post them!!

 

Good luck, sounds like a great project. My son built a 1968 Nova with my dad, his grandpa. It was a great learning experience and time he cherishes.

Working on brakes. We have dana 30 installed with disc brakes, and are hooking up a dual reservoir master cyl. that we got a while ago from R & P. (nice looking setup) I planning on running a T for the break light switch then up to the front, T to the two front hoses. Rear just gets a line to the rear hose over the axle? Do we need a proportioning valve or anything? It's been a while, were getting back into this.

Here's a The run down on our project and where we are at currently.
A Late 50's CJ6 with a V6 swap, a Rebuilt SM465 mated to Dana 18 with Novak adapter. We will be running a Warn overdrive, PTO adapter, and twin stick Ramsey PTO winch. For the rear we're not 100% sure but are leaning towards a rear Ramsey PTO winch as well.
To make room up front for the winch we're re working everything with Herms Power steering kit, and some custom steering shafts. It's really tight, we're close but not there yet. We have rebuilt a disc brake dana 30 and installed a True-trac locker and heavy wall tie rods.
Out back it's resting on the stock dana 44 but we have a flanged 44 which will be getting stuffed with 5:38's and a E-locker and then installed.
Rancho 2.5" springs (I think) and 32-33" tires.
The Odd fire hasn't been run in 15 years so are figuring it will need a complete rebuild.
Body is in relatively good shape, it needs hat channels etc, underneath, and some other love, but has the original floors etc. still in it.
We are trying to fit in a 60/40 split bench as well but haven't figured how to run it with the twin stick pto levers that get moved back for overdrive. We will finish it off with a rust free venting windshield I got in AZ years ago.

 

That's worth the 11 year wait.

Umm... Working on it still. Might I have been a little gutsy to begin with! don't tell dad...

 

You can do it. Make a plan, stay focused and try to tackle one task at a time. All 3 things I am terrible at but as the old saying goes “those who can’t do, teach!” Lol in my defense I have a bad case of HLS....... short for “hey look squirrel”.

 

There were times when I felt overwhelmed with the body work. Scraping off undercoating, for example. Sometimes the hardest part of a particular task is the starting of it. Take a breath, set your jaw, resolve to work efficiently for one hour on the task you are dreading. Next thing you know it's two hours later and you made progress. Do that a few times a week.

What is the job you are dreading? Maybe we can offer some tips, or at least encouragement.

Last night I was at friend's garage working on assembling my 304. Man, did I want to stop at 1930 and go have a beer or three. Almost left. Instead, I stayed and installed both cylinder heads. Tonight is Friday. I'm planning to WANT to have a few beers right after work. Instead I'll run straight to his place and install intake manifold, oil pan, vibe damper, pulleys, etc.

 

The biggest wall I keep hitting is time. School has been super busy the last few months but I just graduated highschool. I have a lot of trips planned this summer however so it's gonna be hard to get a whole lot done this summer! won't stop me from trying though!

 

I had the same plan when I was in high school; fix the Jeep and drive it. It took me two years to make my cj5 roadworthy and I only drove it twice senior year. Not sure it was worth the trouble looking back now.

X3 on time management and staying focused on one thing at a time. Wasted more time and money on other junk cars while I’ve had my 3b that I could’ve done everything for it three times over.
