Front Hub Locks, Loose Again?

In Sept of 18 I almost lost my hubs they got sooooo loose!
I thought I would try to improve my chances of them loosening again.
Bought new g8 socket head bolts, star lock washers, and a fresh bottle locktite!
Well, it's only been 5 months, very few road miles(maybe 50 total),mostly used
On farm, left in low range, then I use the hub locks to mostly ride in 2wd low.
And they started coming out again.
Looks like I'm just going to have to check them each time I check the oil!
Is their a simple fix for this? All u joints and bearings are good!
Don't understand why they keep loosening, I don't beat on the jeep hard, it's only a 134.
Guess I could drill heads and safety wire?

 

The hub bolts tend to come out. Warn used a special washer with a bend-over tab to keep the bolts from loosening. These washers are NLA, AFAIK. I replace the bolts in my hubs with studs, and secured them with flat washers and nylon insert nuts. The studs were secured with loctite. I cleaned oil or grease from the threaded holes with carb cleaner or brake cleaner, don't recall which. Seems ok, but my Jeep does not see a lot of miles.

Safety wire would work too. McMaster-Carr should have cap screws that are already drilled for safety wire.

I use this type and have never had a problem. They are an inexpensive safety measure. I keep an extra set in my trail tool box just in case.

In a pinch one can be fashioned out of a fender washer and tin snips or grinder

 

Nice, BUT(theirs always a but), for 34$ , I can drill for, let's see, Free!
And my round head bolts would be trash!

 

Nice but, I can drill for Free! I love doing mods by skill, instead of deep pockets?
If i were doing it again, id use an aftermarket kit, or pre drilled bolts?

These work pretty well on heavy eq. Never tried them on my jeep
wedge lock or Nord lock McMaster-Carr
not sure there is enough room beside the bolt for this.

 

I believe I picked mine up from Walck's for a lot cheaper than that. $18 for the set from Walck's.

We had a long discussion on this some time back.

IIRC one answer was to use studs with a specific body diameter that is a very close fit in the hole diameter. No room for that initial wiggle that leads to loosening.

 

Another thought would be insert studs and double nut or use nylocks.

 

On my 70 with d30 and warn hubs I had the same problem. Years ago I switched to studs and nylocks.
Never had them come loose again.

 

Never seen such a lock washer as this?

If your are Warn, they were intended to use the lock tabs like mentioned above. Do it the way intended and move down the road. $18 is a cheap solution.

I went to socket heat bolts w/ high-collar lock washers some years ago.I have not had any problems with this system.If and when I do I will go to the studs with nylock nuts as a better mouse trap.
Studs with nuts seems to be the ultimate clamping system for hi-performance and heavy duty applications. mike

 

I have studs, lock washers and nyloc nuts. Mine don't loosen.

 

This is what I run with lock washers. May be overkill but it works. I have them on the front and rear.

 

Yes, I will add studs on my want list. Retighten for now and ride.
My first experience with a locktite failure?
Probably my fault, might not have got the hole clean?
