Stock Battery Location Help

Hello All,
I am in the process of bringing my 57 CJ5 back to original. I just sourced a CJ5 battery tray to replace the late model firewall mounted style. I have searched for detailed pictures of the exact mounting position and have come up empty. The used part I have was removed with a Lincoln wrench and is proving difficult to just lay it on the frame and viola-there it fits. Images are where I think it goes, but could use some precise guidance.

Also thru in a tub picture. Just replaced the spare tire mounting hat channel and support, now welding up a jillion holes.

 

Howard, that is very helpful. Looks like the Lincoln wrench took most of the plate that aligns it with the front cross member. That will be easy to remedy. In order to ensure that I make the plate the correct size, could you give me a measurement from the top of the front cross member to the bottom edge of the front section of the tray (RED measurement.) Also, could you give me the dimensions of the plate (BLACK measurement). Many Thanks for your trouble.

It should clear the passenger side of the radiator and be back far enough to also clear the headlight bucket on the passenger side.

Or if you are not trying for a car show vehicle - have some one measure the placement on the firewall to replace the oil-bath aircleaner unit. Which takes it off of the frame and mounts it on the tub's firewall.

 

What all these guys said, plus when I changed a V 6 frame into an F 134 frame I had to do what you are talking about. One more thing I would like to add is if you can mount the Grill and make sure the battery box clears the right front fender, the fender is made to go around the battery box, if not the fender will hit the battery box. I am assuming you have original fenders, the after market fenders may not clear the battery box anyway. I cut the inner fender out of my original rusty fender, along with factory reinforcement and welded in into the after market to make it look more original and made sure it didn't hit the battery box. Just a suggestion, Good Luck

 

Rick and Glenn, thanks for the info, advice and suggestions. I will certainly do a mock up before burning it in for good. My fenders are original as is the grill, they are currently at the chem dipper getting many coats of paint and yuck off. Luckily, this is a dry southwest vehicle and has very little rust and rot.

Again thanks for the info, if anyone has a bare frame and can take a few measurements as noted in the above pictures, I would be grateful. Gracias
