To answer the second question, electric are perhaps easier to install, and can get you out of a jam. But for sustained pulling power a PTO will perform much better as a serious work-horse. Others may disagree.

Dana 20 transfer case? Yes there are PTO's available, they're rare but they're out there. They replace the transfer case pan and as such they do hang down a bit reducing ground clearance.

Electric is easier & under some situations where the engine can't run definitely better but a PTO will outhaul anything electric costing less than 5 figures.

Cons of PTO? The engine has to be running!
Now of course an electric won't pull very long with the engine off before it kills your battery, but if you're stuck in a river or mud hole and drowned out the engine it may be enough to get the job done.
But as posted above, a PTO will pull all day long and will make most electrics look stupid when it comes to pulling power,

Ok, maybe not that badly. :D It's pretty low on the priority list, but I do watch for them locally.

Not seeing the relay box or control cable. :(

"Everything moves", but does the motor spin?

I have not given up on this winch deal. Now looking at a Belleview/Warn winch. No control cables, broken main gear tooth but the motor is sound and the rest of it is in good condition. And of course it is on the other side of the country (west coast) as it seems all of the good old jeep parts are. Price is $75. First can someone explain how the Fastenal shipping works? Would that be the best way to send it across the country? And most importantly what am i getting into?

Although the old Belleview winches were great in their day, considering your total costs for winch, shipping and trying to find parts for the old winch, I would pass on that one. The only place that I know of that may have parts is Herm. Short of him, you will be looking for another old Belleview winch for parts.

  18. RATTYFLATTY

RATTYFLATTY I think you need a little more throttle

Not to open up another can of worms. You say your jeep is all original, you don't happen to have a T18 with a PTO port on the side in it?

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

One listed in early classifieds right now....

I have a konig pto winch in working order nothing broken on it.
As well as the take off . I'd like to sell it to fund another aspect of my build. Not sure where he I would post it. I considered here rather than what. They seem to sell very quickly there and are usually broken or incomplete
