hello all . just bought a 70 with v6 auto .I owned a couple 20+ yrs ago . let them go as I had a really full plate .guess im ready to try again ! mtr is stuck , appears as if p/o let water run in to the carb and just left it. lied and said the mtr turned over but the starter was not wired up. should have checked .ive got it soaking in diesel now , but I doubt it will break lose. anyway it came with a offy 360 intake and a edlb. carb . anyone know how these work ? seems like over kill for a little v6 .should I be looking for a stock manifold . or a adapter to put a 2barrel on the offy. not trying to make a race car .just want it to run good . if I can make it run at all

    My '70 cj5 came with a 4bbl Edlebrock carb:

I've had to rebuild it because something must have clogged a jet or passage inside and it would only run with the choke on. The carb has two floats and two fuel bowls. When the jeep is tilted to one side or the other, the fuel from one bowl spills over to the other, overflowing it and flooding the engine. The carb works fine on the road but it's not a very well behaved carb for steep trails.

I think that's the same setup ive got . not planning on much wheeling .so on the road it works as good ,better than a stock carb

The manifold works just fine.........I think the Edelbrock Carb is either a 500 or 650 cfm.....................Personally for the little Buick V6, I like the little Holly 390 CFM 4-barrel carb . Holley 0-8007 390 CFM Classic Holley Carburetor ..........Vacuum operated secondaries so there only opening when there is enough load and need for the extra fuel.........couple that with an off-road kit for the 390 and you have a carb that has a ton of Holley support parts and is infinitely adjustable...I've ran them from sea level to 10,000 ft with minimal changes...

I know the holly is the best to work on . 390 seems more like the size for a 225 ,and the better the milage the happier ill be ,.would think 20 mpg could happen but seems like 15 is realistic ?

I had an edelbrock/carter carb like that. Washboards would make it flood out on steep cliff roads. Worst POS i ever had. Really scary when you're driving down road, hit some washboards, truck dies, you lose power brakes and steering where if you go off the side, you die.
I run that holley 390 on my v6. I have had no trouble, but haven't wheeled it remotely hard. It has worked VERY well for me though. I had an issue with it when i first got it and holley/summit fixed it right away. I like it.

Oh, I run th OFFY 360. Works just fine for me.

Hard to judge.....everyone's driving styles are different......and low gears and big tires are hard on mileage....

Hope you get it unstuck. May take a lot of patience and repeated soakings of the cylinders but I've seen a lot of hard-luck cases come back.

    If it's an Edelbrock 1404, that's a 500 cfm. 1405 or 1406 are 600 cfm, and are too much carb for a 225.
They do make a spring loaded needle & seat for those which helps off road manners. While you have the top off, plug the passage between the 2 float bowls with some JB weld, that'll stop the sidehill flooding mentioned above.

I guess im going tomorrow to pick up a 64 225 from a buick special ! should be a easy r/r ,right ?don't need any suprises . .. havnt seen the mtr, yet ,but owner says it ran grt. and had good oil pressure . says it has a one barrel carb .? I dnt remember ever seeing a 1 barrel on a v6 . well see . ive always had good luck with stuck mtrs with a stick by putting them in gear and pulling them in high and reverse , but with a auto cant do that!!

well ,picked up the new/used mtr. yesterday .still in my pickup . sure hope its a good mtr. did have a one barrel on it ,so I have to decide wether to leave it that way ,or put the offy on it. is the 225 rated at 160 hp . or is that with the 2 barrel . for economy I guess the one barrel should do good .anyone running one ??

I would leave the 1 barrel on it for now. See if you can crank it over to check compression. Maybe pull the oil pan and inspect for sludge and clean the oil pump pickup screen. You could also check the bearing clearance with plastigauge while you are in there. Get it checked out /operational first then think about changing the 1 barrel and intake manifold after that.

Did the 225 come with a 1 barrel? Didn't they all come with 2Gc's? Did the 198's come with the 1 barrel?

RATTYFLATTY I think you need a little more throttle

I have a 360 Offy on mine with a 2150 Motorcraft on it with 48(if memory serves)mains in it. I get 15-18 under normal driving. It performes great off road.

Gee, thanks. I have a 1965 buick 225 and it came with the 2 GC. All the motors are really Buick. My point was that maybe his motor he got "Might" be a 198. Thanks Mike for the snark.

Gee well sorry it came out that way. Who knows what a engine might have on it after 50 years. The best way for me is to check numbers in the repair manuals weather it be carbs or dist ,what have you.
Yes it may well have been a 198. mike

book sez 1964-65 came with 1 barrel .Go figure. Have not heard of a dauntless in a cj5 with 2GC (automatic choke)although the jeepster had a 2GC. I have that carb on my '69 converted to electric.
    cheers mike
