'73 Cj6 Gas Filler Relocation?

Thinking about moving the filler from the passenger rear, to the passenger side.

I have read through this thread: Gas filler neck relocation

My initial thoughts are to use a cj7 filler neck & bezel... but it seems the 76-86 CJ's had a 1" ID fuel line, while the 73-75's had a 2 1/4" ID line...

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Reducing 2 1/4" to 1" seems tough...
maybe reduce to 2" and look for other filler neck options?

I know there is a side support the inside of the quarter panel for the tire mount that I will need to deal with... and was contemplating using some of the flexible fuel filler hose available, such as this:

2" I.D. Gas -Diesel - Fuel - Oil Fill Hose (Corrugated W/ Wire)(Per Inch)

(this all stemmed from wanting to put new rear steel corners on... which are uncut... I do not have the original tail lights, so was going to swap in 4" LED's... which got me thinking about new reverse lights, etc... which got me thinking about moving the fuel filler, before I cut into the steel corners..... good old ball of twine project..)

 

I did this on mine but I fabricated everything from scratch as I built my own tank. I used a TJ fuel filler surround and I think a Nissan filler. I used flex hose between tank and filler. The only issue I have is the return line is to small so it's difficult to fill as it floods back when filling.

 

I did this, swapped to the later model filler. The intermediate stock filler hose fits over the whole deal (both hose barbs) no need to reduce filler hose size, but it can flood back if your not careful. Not sure if that's due to faster fuel pumps, the S shaped filler hose or my hack solution to this upgrade.

Thinking of going back to the original when I redo the rear corners.

 

digging around the interwebs tonight... something like this may get me in the right direction with a reducer or two... can't find any details on the ID of the vent tube on the CJ, but i can get a 2 x 2.25 reducer for the main hose...
ill the keep the thread updated if i end up going down this path...

2" Diameter x 4" Long Diesel Fuel Filler Neck with 5/8" diameter vent and angled mounting flange.

Angled flange is slanted at 10 degrees, measures approx. 3.25" x 3.44" and has 8 predrilled holes for mounting.

Connects to 2" hose.

 

anyone happen to know the hole diameter in the cj7 bezel?

 

Make sure to ground the filler, since it will now be floating in plastic and not grounded to the body.

 

I hid mine inside the wheel well. Not the greatest location but it is completely out of sight and had to cut no holes in my corner armor.

The filler hose will back up from the fumes from gasoline, if not vented. If the gasoline starts backing it means the vapor has no way to vent except back up the hose. That is why the intermediate has a seperate hose for the fill neck.

 

Why does the filler neck need to be grounded?

I have a late model Chevy truck filler neck mounted in the plastic CJ bezel should I ground it?

 

Static electricity build up in the filler hose.
Same reason you need to fill a plastic fuel container on the ground or not sit in your car when filling up.

If it's factory it should already be grounded, but worth it to double check.

 

Good to know, it’s not factory, not grounded but it will be tomorrow.
