Brake Peddle Wobble

My thru the floor brake peddle has some side to side wobble. The shaft does not appear to have any damage. I have ordered the bushing for the brake shaft from Walcks even though it says only for the wagons, etc. hoping it might be of use. However, it is too small for the clutch shaft. Are all the brake pedals this way or is there something that can be done?

All thread/ready rod/ whatever it is called in your town with a couple of washers and lock nuts on each end to tighten the pedals up.

Is that how it was done originally, or did they leave the factory wobbling?

Pretty sure most wobbled by the time you made it home from the dealer. Really poor design that hung around for 30 years.

Mcruff (member here) will install a bushing and size it to the shaft if you want to go that route. He does great work.

Mine has wobble. Brakes work fine. The clutch doesn't have any side to side wobble.

I had mine redone at a local machine shop. There are replacement shafts available also, I don't remember where I got mine though. Good luck.

Mine when I got it rubbed a slot in the floor board. I will replace the bushings or rod when I get it all re-assembled.

    Thanks,

    Dave

Mine has it. A little disconcerting. But it’s never not stopped me

I've got wobble on the pedals and I think my route initially is the all thread. In the future its either McGruff as mentioned above or swinging firewall pedals.

I can highly recommend mcruff's work as well. If you have him install a new bushing in your brake pedal arm, make sure you replace the clutch-brake cross shaft the brake pedal arm rotates on as part of the repair, as that part also wears out over time.

If the mcgruff option is used we just mail off the assembly?

Yes, usually you just send mcruff your parts and he sends back his artistic rendition of what it should have always been. Good to contact him first, he is likely to want the arm and cross shaft too as he machines the bushing bore to the right oil/grease clearance with the shaft. Yep, he's good.

Just reporting back. I had mcgruff do the bushing and replaced the shaft as he recommended. It is nice now with no wobble. For $49 with shipping, plus the shaft, it was worth it for me. I would highly recommend his work. You might get a local shop to do it for less, but mcgruff has done a number of these so I choose to use him and very satisfied.

Thanks for the reply, I will do the same when it comes time again. I grease mine when I am doing U-joints and steering lube.

Where did you buy the shaft and how much was that piece?

Walcks. Cross Tube Brake Pedal 1948-1966 CJ Models Be aware that the key way was not cut right and I had to grind mine down. But I called in and Daniel checked all of his stock and same issue. He said I was first to report it in all these years. He said they are sending them all out to be corrected. So be sure to ask if corrected before you order.
