I use a lesser drill press often. It is a bench-top model on a sturdy stand, which allows an occasional floor location shift for drilling long or odd configured stuff.
Get a few accessories such as a vise and a "V'" block (mine's home-made & not bolted)

 

Years ago, the motor burnt up on mine on a Saturday on a big project with a deadline that next Monday. I was forced to pay $40 for a tiny POS Harbor Freight junker on CL just for the motor. I would have been beyond happy to find that one.

A drill press is one of those tools that you won't know how you got along without it.

It's a "big boy toy" there are a lot worse ways to blow $45. My wife and I have an "understanding"...

 

GET IT! USE IT!

I have an el-cheapo Hardboard Crate model. My grandpa (passed recently) gave it to me years ago, and he picked it up at a garage sale for $20. Funny thing, for the most part it drills holes all day long if I set it up right. I use cutting fluid on steel with it and step the bits in smaller to larger. I use it occasionally for wood bits - I wish the table tilted on it (it swivels - I need to build a little jig for my tilt needs). I even built a mandrel out of a wooden dowel and all-thread and used a different set of files for different shapes for edge-finishing leather work (rub a little bee's wax, and turn it on, sure beats doing that by hand)... I bought a couple cheapo chinese end-mill bits. I've used them to 'surface' an new iron skillet that was way 'TOO' lumpy with the sand casting on the cooking surface ... thank you lodge - note tho, that tis' not meant to be a mill, you have to go easy...
