Peg Board Or Tool Cabinet/chest

Historically I have set my garages up with pegboard and a few wood cabinet drawers. My feelings were always that I could see what I wanted AND tell if something is missing. However, the smaller hole pegboard holds the hooks, etc in pretty good, but is thin and over time any heavy items start to pull and distort the peg. But the larger hole peg board is sturdier but the damn hooks come off as I grab a tool. Iveveven tried those little plastic retaining clips but not really better. As I start to design the house and garage for our move to the mountains of CO, I'm rethinking lots of things. Including metal pegboard, magnetic strips, tool chests, etc. So I'm looking for input and experiences with other options. Especially the chest route. I know it makes the garage neater, but things are hidden in drawers so finding seems to be problematic. Way, way back in my youth when I worked as a mechanic, cabinets were great to 'secure' your tools and move around to different work areas, but I just moved towards open, on the wall approach.

I’ve never owned Peg board in my own shop but did work at a bike shop with 4 pits all with different color tools and pegboard and it was convenient . At this point in my life I have a bunch of tool boxes, craftsman, and an old file cabinet and shelves. I will add the file cabinet works great for liquids and bottle of stuff etc.

 

Had the same problem with peg board. Worked well until it cracked and split. When I finished the walls in my shop, I used plywood on the walls instead of sheet rock. Now I can mount what I want on the walls. I have bought some old library cabinets and made them into bolt cabinets with dividers to keep bolts and stuff in. Still don't have it all organized as well as I want but it is getting better.

That would make me extremely nervous. Drywall's over-riding purpose is that it doesn't burn and having fire starter on the wall someplace where I'm welding/grinding isn't something I'm going to do. In the shop, I have extensive 1/4 pegboard mounted over the top of drywall. Not too many tools on it-all parts. Whether or not the hooks come out in use depends a lot on where you get those. Some of the ones from McMaster-Carr are hard to get in but stay put.

I use 1/4" pegboard for some tools like c-clamps and pipe wrenches in the garage but keep all the hand tools in chests. That pegboard is mounted on concrete.

 

One suggestion would be to hot glue the hooks onto the pegboard when you finally get them arranged where you want them.

 

If you do any type of welding or grinding in the area, exposed magnets will be a nightmare with shavings and dust.

 

I am the odd man down . all 4 walls in my garage are pegboard . tons of junk hanging from them . and learned things can still hide in plain sight

 

Never thought of that. I'll need to process that and might experiment some with that here.

One thing you can do for the welding magnets is slip them inside a sandwich baggie and when the grinding is done. toss the baggie - and all the shavings away.

I've got the larger ones but the problem is they don't have the lower nub that fits in the hole below the hook part like the smaller ones I got years ago. That bottom nub, or whatever it's called, locks them in. The bigger ones I got at HD/Lowes just hook in the upper hook but the bottom just swings and wobbles. And that black plastic clip is almost worthless.


I too run the furing strips first but any more that one horizontal (other than the edges) in the middle then invariably gets in way of where you need hooks.

 

Interesting thread. I have chests and a 5 x 9 peg above the work bench. Most used and common tools on the board. All else in the chests. Having many specialty tools and not used that often are in the chests. I do like the peg board but, it seems that no one in my home besides myself can put the tools back in their place. Just put them on the work bench....Dad will put them away. Now I know how my Dad felt about his tools not being put away as found. We have 2 boys....Mom and Dad had 5 boys so one can imagine.

 

Same experience. Sometimes the wife puts them back but I finally got her own common things and said use 'YOURS'. Back in the day of dvd's I faced the same issue. I have a pretty extensive collection and no matter what I did, I found wrong movie in wrong case, empty cases, not put back in alphabetical slot it was taken from, left laying around, etc, etc, etc. Gave up and ripped them to massive server and did media servers from hacked original XBoxes. But that's another story. Kids grown and away now so both tools and disc issue mostly solved.

 

You can have peg board and cabinets. My Dad was a woodworker, and he built cabinets that covered every wall in his garage. His door of choice was inexpensive hollow-core interior doors, and he would put peg board on the interior of the cabinets, so the tools were out of sight when stored. I prefer shelves and plastic boxes, though I'm building some drawers for hardware right now. Drawers are easy to build if they do not have to be furniture - just a box with drawer slides to attach to the cabinet.
