1971 Cj5 Seat And Bracket Issues

Hey all, new to forums so hope this is the right spot. I just purchased a 71 CJ5 and I am quickly finding out it is quite a bit different than my previous CJ7s. I must say it is pretty awesome and already like it more than the 7s but I have a few issues I hope you can help me out with.

1st issue are the seat brackets. At first I thought they were homemade since there was no adjustment and my head was trying to poke through the soft top even though I am not tall. I think they are original and I can fix the drivers side by cutting the "legs" off the seat above the bracket. But how do you adjust the back and forth to the pedals for leg length? Drill holes and remount? Were sliders options back then?

2nd issue is passenger seat bracket. It looks original mixed with some angle then welded and bolted down so there in no easy way to access the little storage space. Was there an issue of the bracket bouncing in these models? Know where I could pick up original passenger seat brackets and mounts so I can lean the seat forward like it should be to fix this problem? And that is a guess that it should lean forward by the way. I have not yet bought a book which leads me to another question. Suggest a good manual? Chiltons?

3rd issue is back seat. There is none and I would like to add one for the kiddos. I have a half circle mount half way down the tub wall and I have no idea what it is for. Since there is no drop off for their feet to dangle down do you have a solution to raise a back seat 5 inches or so? So their legs can hang down and not straight out in front?

You are in the right place to find out what is going on with your seats. Photographs of what you have would help us. A picture is worth a thousand words.

1 - driver seat frame is made of tubing with two flat runners front to back . with a seat slider for adjustment . although there isn't much adjustment . so many have done whats called a wheel house notch . and allows seat to move farther back
2 - passenger seat frame is two pieces . one front mounting hoop attached to floor . and a seat frame with spacers under seat . that pivot on the floor mount . should have a catch plate on floor behind seat . no adjustment on passenger side
3 - any late model rear seat stock or aftermarket will work in rear . don't forget seat belts

So looking at your pics does the passenger seat "jump" in the back when you hit bumps?

 

are you asking me . no. rear of seat has a factory latch

My 70 has the stock seat setup if you want to look at it.

 

I am in Salida. Thanks guys. Looks like I need to find a new passenger bracket and mounting hardware then. Anyone come come up for an idea on how to raise the rear seat a few inches? Looks like quite a few options for rear seats themselves, would like to get it off the floor for leg room though.

 

Same clasp used for the hood to windshield safety clasp.

 

I would watch CL for a rear jeep seat. I've used a cj7 and YJ seats. If the seats come with brackets that's great.



Or you can make your own bracket .

Awesome, thanks for the pics. I think I might have run into a problem and found out why my head was sticking into the soft top. Spacers were added between the driver seat and original bracket to allow for more room to move the seat back against the wheel well. The steering wheel was also swapped out to allow for room. A Mercedes steering wheel at that, the bastards. So new question, the leg room is tight without the spacers and I am only 5'8"-5'9". My knees are 4-5 inches from the dash. Are original seats any more accommodating than aftermarket? These high back seats are jammed against the wheel well and it is tight! This is the spacer. ​

 

I would search for wheel well notch.
