Advance Adapters Saginaw Conversion

    I bought an Advance Adapters saginaw conversion kit and I'm now a bit confused.
    Kit in question: 716805 : Jeep 1942-1970 Manual Steering Kit (Borgeson Style) | Advance Adapters

    Take a look at the pictures. The inner steering column was cut off about an inch from the worm gear. With everything together, the U joint connecting the steering shaft to the column is right in the middle of the firewall. The Steering wheel is WAY too far up. The steering shaft is collapsible and in the pictures, this is as collapsed as I can get it.

    Any advice? I don't have a problem cutting anything but want to make sure I'm doing it right. My initial thoughts are to cut the larger end of the steering shaft down about 2-3 inches then cut the inner steering column to fit followed by shortening the outer steering column.

    Looks like the shaft with the steering wheel needs to be shortened along with the double D collapsible shaft back to the steering gear also is too long.................just need to shrink everything a little until it fits.

    All the parts in the kit are subject to adjustment. I used a different column in mine but if I was using the original I would fit the column to the dash. You’ll need to support the column at the floor since the Ross box is no longer there. Is the steering box permanently mounted? Has the engine of choice been selected and fitted with a manifold or header on that side to check for clearance?

    i recently made the Saginaw conversion using my original column. i first cut it right off at the worm screw, but then took another 2" off to get the steering column down to a comfortable height . My outer tube sticks about 2" below the floor board. i have about a 32 deg angle on the u-joint. The second picture shows (not very well) 15.5" with the end of the tape against the dash to the top of the horn button . Hope this helps. It does feel higher than it was originally, but i am getting use to it.

    The frame is actually a throtteldownkustoms frame. They integrated the mounting holes for the saginaw steering box. Engine is a chevy v8 and is going to be test fit on Sunday. Need to position the engine mounts. Figured this steering dry fit would need to go in to measure clearance with everything too.

    @homersdog did you cut the steering shaft any? With the spud shaft and steering shaft, my upper U joint sits halfway inside the cab. I'm thinking I'll have to cut it but wonder if I should cut the small end or the large end.

    Yes I did cut it but I don't remember how much. I think the instructions that come with the AA kit tell you to cut it as needed for your installation.

    I think I would hold off cutting any more at this point until you have the engine and mounts in place.
    You could cut it twice and still be too short.......

    i used the AA kit in my 54 3B, kit took a lot of finessing to get in. Lots of moving the box a little, and the column a little, then doing it 5 more times to get everything to clear and and work. Still had to completely redesign the motor mount.
    worth it in the end, But a PITA

    i didnt use the spud shaft, i got a borgeson joint that went right from the box to the steering shaft
