    Hello kind gents;

Where could I look for replacement starter parts for a stock 12 V F-134 starter? Bendix engages fine with the flywheel, it's just that the starter is gradually loosing rpm's when it's engaged. Charging system is working fine. I have good grounds, battery and heavy gauge cables.

I suspect brushes are the problem but I'd be grateful for pointers. Part numbers would be helpful. I'f I'm going through the trouble to take the starter apart to clean and lubricate, may as well change brushes.

    Grateful as always....Pete

Tried just polishing the commutator and brushes? See if the brushes move freely, and are still long enough?

Solenoid check out…? not getting too hot when cranking (dirty contacts)? Tried bypassing it?
My '34 Ford cranked like :poo: for years, until I finally cleaned the starter button contacts. Now it fires up like an inappropriately molested ape!

Ebay almost always has various stuff. If not this week then maybe next week.
Also it makes a great cross-reference for part numbers and applications.

Then there are all the Jeep suppliers mentioned in these forums.

Hemmings Motor News always had lots of ads from people who rebuild anything - at a price.

Best of all would be that old "motor rebuild" place down by the abandoned railroad yard…

In fact long ago there used to be a machine shop in Keene that specialized in Jeeps. Also look up Gunseth Jeep in Swanzey - for years his dad maintained a huge yard of Jeep salvage.

RockAuto shows 3 or 4 different sources for F134 starter brushes, including Standard EX18T or Airtex 5A1047. I would get the Airtex (if the picture looks right) because the Standard "T" suffix is their low-end part. Or see if you can find a Standard EX18.

And if all else fails google toyota starter for an F-head. Almost direct bolt in for a fraction of the cost and way better quality part then the originals ever were.

I bought the jeep with a Toyota starter in it, but I sold it it the interest of keeping it as original as possible.

Sometimes it is better to have a Jeep actually run then to sit and rot while looking cool.

I have actually had 4 original 6 volt Jeeps in the last year. I have had a couple starters rebuilt but I have the advantage of having a local shop with an old codger that makes the crypt keeper ( Google it) look like a todler. Won't be long before rebuilding a starter or a generator won't be possible for most of us. I am truly amazed at times how many parts are still available for our beloved chariots.

Totally agree. All my Jeeps have always been for driving, not for show. Same for my other vehicles from back into the 1920s

Having a near stock original configuration gives me the easiest way to minimize downtime.
You start swapping stuff out for randomly sourced parts and it gets more and more complex to maintain an older vehicle.

And for my 50 years of experience with F-heads, the (OEM) starters have been one of the most trouble-free components.

I agree. This is the first one I've had go(ing) south on me after 25 years of owning F-Head. Granted they do crank more slowly than most, they do get the job done.

I bought a few NOS brush sets to have on hand at $9.00 each.

Must be a luck thing as the starter on an F-head has always been one of the biggest drawbacks to the motor on the dozens of F-head Jeeps that I have owned. Thus the Toyota starter fix has saved a lot of these motors from the scrap pile in the last decade.

Maybe a difference of perspective. Buying and selling "running" units short term, versus lifetime ownership of a particular vehicle.

I am always thinking of the time a decade or two ahead (on the same jeep) when I may be looking for parts.
Seems safer to stay with OEM. And potentially keeps the collector value higher, and my spares inventory simpler.
