When pulling the F134, about how far forward does the engine need to come to clear the tranny, etc.

    Bellhousing on or off?

I unbolt the bellhousing from the engine, put a little forward /up strain on the engine & give it a good shake- it'll pop forward till it hits the crossmember & then can be lifted up.

Just undid the 4 engine bolts. Was hoping to get it out that way.

Remember at a minimum it has to come forward far enough for the transmission input shaft to be disengaged from the clutch.

Best to remove your radiator first if you haven't already done so. I usually just pull the grille.

I pull the grill so I have more room for my engine hoist, it's really quick to do.

Yep getting it out with the clutch on and the water pump pully/crank pully had to twist etc. Putting it back in, I may just pull the grill. I decided to get the 2 ton Harbor Freight chain hoist (2 ton Manual Chain Hoist) with it attached to my bobcat forks with the boom all the way in the high position. And yes I had the safety brace in place. It actually worked better than engine hoists I've used in the past and after a 20% off it was only $56. The chain moves very little for the amount of pulls but that actually worked well. In any event, it's out and at the rebuilders. Now a 4-6 week wait but he does a number of these F 134's and the L226's, which is next to pull the wagon motor. In fact he had one he just finished which had been in a ambulance jeep. It had the magneto and a few other different military items.

A 226 in a Jeep ambulance? I know they put the OHC 230 in the M715 and M725, didn't know there was an application for a 226. Or am I misreading and not realizing you meant the 134 in a M170?

    Not the 226, the 134.

Yes that's what he said and when I looked it, it was not a typical looking distributor. The top cap was flat and had holes for the plug wires to come out but we're not raised like normal caps.

I'm sure it's the waterproof distributor that you saw.

Just FYI, there is an actual distributor cap under that metal cover and the coil is in the round fluted part of the distributor base.

The M38A1 had hinges on the bottom of the grill, I believe to make engine changes faster and maybe easier. If military design carries any weight for you, I'd call this an indicator as to the best and easiest way to pull the engine ......removing the grill.

I totally agree with removing the grill, makes it much easier.

You can even do it without unhooking any wiring. :D

I don't remember the plug wire having any screw on threads. They were just holes the thickness of plug wires. But I wasn't really studying it that close. That's just what the rebuilder said and he's an older guy with sh#t ton of experience.
