So..... Series 2a. Early with headlights in the grill, or later with them in the fenders? A 225 has to be a big improvement on a 2.25! Put a 3.5 in and make it a Stage 1.

Building a 1971 Series 2a 88" with essentially a Jeep drivetrain...

the 225 puts out more HP and better torque than the Stage 1 3.5 ever did with 2 less cylinders.. and its essentially the same engine..
trying to save the patina and not fully restore this one..
its a NAS truck that spent its entire life in Rochester.. so the bulkhead and frame were toast..
still in the parts collection phase, but things are slowly coming together with this thing.

Ill be bolting the 225 to a T176 and keeping the native Series Tcase with an overdrive..
also keeping the series axles that I'm currently rebuilding..

 

The Rover version of the 3.5 for the Stage 1 was a bit anemic, but the Buick 215 from a '63 Skylark made 200hp/245tq. Its also lighter than the Dauntless.
Either way, the stock Rover axles should have 4:71 axles, so the Dauntless should move a Series 2 around pretty well.
I have a question. How are you connecting your T176 to the Dauntless? I have both, with matching bellhousings. The AMC bellhousing is about 1/2" deeper than the Jeep/GM bellhousing, and the lower bolt holes in the T176 fall a bit lower than the mating surface of the Jeep bellhousing.
Do you plan to fabricate a 1/2" spacer? How are you attaching the Rover T-case?

Thought about a V8...
Contemplated a native option (rover) or a Chevy... just didn’t seem worth all the effort..
Engine compartment room is an issue, don’t want to get into making room for minimal gain...

Buick V6 414 lbs
Land Rover 2.25 450 lbs

Actually just mocked up the tranny tonight..
I have two options...
Chevy plate adapter to an early Buick bell housing.. also have an adapter bellhousing.

Rebuilding the Series case with the 23 spline 6 bolt advance adapter unit..

Should all slide together nicely...

You had me at, "essentially a Jeep drivetrain..."

 

Buick V6 414lbs
Rover 2.25 450lbs
Buick 215/Rover 3.5 alloy V8 320lbs!
Looks like I need to keep an eye out for that adapter plate, or fabricate one.

in a CJ/YJ I could see this being a viable setup..
Atlas or NP231 and you have a really lightweight drivetrain..

In a series truck, especially an 88", it would be very cool, but a lot more fabrication of the bulkhead and radiator panel than I care to do.
I'm already going to have to move the motor forward a touch to keep the rear driveshaft in check..
most of the V8 trucks I have seen used a truck 4 speed with a plate adapter to shorten the drivetrain up a bit..
The stock Series transmission isn't up to the task..

 

I had a Buick 215 in my '64 Tux for years. I cut the firewall to move the engine back almost 4". The rig weighed in right at around 2000lbs with a full tank of gas. It was a strong running Jeep.
I'm shoe-horning an AMC 360/TH400/Quadratrac in a Series 3/D90 hybrid. I'm using a D90 galvy chassis and D90 bulkhead and fenders, but a short Series hood. Its going to be tight with an A/C condenser up front.
I'm not sure my stock Disco axles (fine spline) are going to be up to the torque.

Winter break update:

As it sits now...

Rover axles stripped down.
Rear axle prepped and painted, ready for assembly
Front axle stripped, needs paint and waiting on some front end parts.

Taper leaf (parabolic) suspension on shop floor

Assorted brackets, backing plates, etc all dropped at sandblaster for prep and paint. (Using a new product.. U Tech industrial coatings)

Bulkhead repaired to stock, awaiting drivetrain placement for any final tweaks.
Some light body repairs done or in process as well.

Dauntless Engine dropped at machine shop
T176 in drop in condition, Buick bellhousing already on.
Tranfercase adapter on backorder... patiently waiting

quick question...

stock or aluminum intake on these motors?
Leaning toward keeping it stock so I can run the stock carb... but im interested in some first hand experience..

 

I run an offenhauser 360 intake. It allows the use of the 4 barrel holley carb. The 2 GC i had was wore out and getting it to run right was going to need me to get it rebushed and professionally rebuilt. It was a similar price for me to do the aluminum intake and new Holley carb. Works just fine for me.

 

do you run stock ignition?

that was going to be phase 2 of my question..
assuming you are running a 4bbl... a 390 CFM? what kind of mpg or seat of pants performance you notice?
