You should also be able to loosen the oil fill cap to check for blow by.

Here is a link for how my jeep was running before. About 3 weeks ago.

I think so.........even though the valves are vertically orientated in the block the guides can still leak especially , if the crankcase is pressurized below because of ring leakage.................. once the exhaust valve is opened it leaves a direct path for oil to escape.........that is why looking at the exhaust pipe may provide some clues. ????

My pipe which I think is original? Or old.

Can't tell much from here.............but what your looking for is black and perhaps wet soot inside the pipe enough that it gets your finger dirty...........when the motor is running take a piece of clean cardboard and while some revs the motor up see what you get on the cardboard?

IMG_0422.JPG Jeep has been sitting for a few days went and checked oil today and found. I still need to check number 4 cylinder for low compression but I'm sure it's a valve. I'm guessing I have slow draining oil.

Well that's a good sign. Either drain holes in the head are plugged somewhat or on the side of the block pull the cover off and see if the drain holes there are plugged.

Pulled both covers to check drain holes didn't find anything plugging drain holes. Are the push rod holes the drains for the head? Re checked compression number 4 is still low checked valve clearance still same. Leak down test next.

Yes, and I think there were maybe a couple more separate holes. Holes on the side of the block visibly open too?

Not sure where your going with that?..........Checking oil is best done when cold .....always!..........so if your loosing 2 quarts as you stated on that trip , pure and simple it either went on the ground or out the tail pipe......PVC problems aside if it was putting oil back into the carburetor or intake track in the amount you mentioned and trying to burn it the spark plugs would look much worst than they do.............You mentioned before you checked the intake valve guides & just how did you do that? Did you also check the exhaust side?

Leak the motor down..........borrow the gauges , find a friend who has them......and do the simple test inside the tail pipe with your finger ..........is it black and moist ? and the cardboard test at the tailpipe................

I always check my oil cold. I checked oil on Monday morning before I drove to work. When I left work oil level was lower I didn't add oil drove home jeep had sat tell I checked oil yesterday about the same from Monday morning. When I pulled the intake valves out I "mic'd" the valves and guides. I didn't touch the exhaust side. My tail pipe is black. I ordered a leak down tester, waiting tell it gets here. My working theory is oil is slow draining into oil pan which makes it like it's low, I put more oil in jeep now over filled and consuming oil.

Definitely better to check when cold or after sitting for maybe an hour at least, but in reality most of the oil should be drained back in the pan within 5 minutes. I've never had an engine do like the one shown. I wonder if the head is full of sludge. I suggest pulling the valve cover again and checking for plugged drain holes with a probe.

Do you have oil pressure immediately upon startup? I'm wondering if there is a leak on your pump or lines somewhere and it's allowing your engine to drain all the oil back onto the pan.

But that still wouldn't explain the consumption. Does it smoke? I can't imagine burning that much oil and not looking like a crop duster.

I think every one is missing the fact that after sitting for a few days he has more oil back in the pan, thus the slow draining part. The consumption apparently is not what it seemed to be.

Lol me too, when I pulled the head off I cleaned it in my parts washer. When I look at the FSM for oil passages it doesn't so much I've been googling for info haven't found anything yet. I'm planning on getting more done today.

Factory style just a Idiot light, which works as is supposed to. I haven't seen it smoke much a little here and there.

Yeah, it's hard to get detail on some things from the manual.

The only other thing I can think of causing slow draining is the timing cover area. Maybe where it drains into the pan is somehow blocked partially. I would check further into the head first though.

My initial thought was the exhaust valve cover area. It's been so long since I've had one of these apart, I can't remember what the oil return holes look like in there. But as poor as the gaskets ever sealed that area, I'd be surprised if it could pool in there without leaking out.

I agree, this whole thing has me confused.
