Stripped Trans To Tc Bolt Threads.. How Would You Fix It?

So this little guy is stripped and is keeping the gasket from sealing completely.


I'm thinking the easiest way to fix this is going to remove the TC leaving the trans in place.

Drill and tap the hole

Would you use a die? Or a helicoil?

Pretty PO'd about having to do this..

Just want your thoughts.

The only way to actually fix it is a helicoil. Very easy job, just time consuming to drop the TC. You will have plenty of lubricant for the drill and tap.

 

Helicoil X3..........and doing it while in the Jeep is OK , while laying on your back.........Except..................you'll only get one chance to get the over-sized hole drilled straight and the helicoil tap started straight............so think long and hard about how you can accomplish that before you turn on your trusty little drill..............perhaps a fixture as a guide that helps the alignment?..............and keep in mind that the hole may go through into the oil inside the case so a guide as to depth is also a consideration so that shavings don't get inside..................just saying from experience as the next step if not done correctly can really add to the pain.

 

Maybe a longer bolt?

 

Pulling a 3-speed trans and transfer case from a CJ is not that hard. Once the transfer case is down, the transmission is even easier. Just saying... With it out, you could pay your local automotive machine shop to install the Helicoil. Ask for a quote.

 

Helicoil. I did one on my engine a few months backed, worked slick as snot.

 

It literally is a 5 minute job once the TC is down. Drill, tap, insert and put it all back together.

 

All well and good, but the set-up cost for making the Helicoil repair is not nothing. You'll need to buy a 3/8"-16 HeliCoil kit (guessing it's that size, ca $20) plus a drill bit (I think it needs an X letter drill, likely $10 from McMaster-Carr). So your initial cost will be on the order of $30-50. Then you'll have to do the work yourself... The bolt is a common size, and your local shop can probably do it for less than the cost of the parts and tooling, if you bring them the transmission, drained of oil. The downside is that you won't have the tools when you are done, but how many times do you expect to need the tooling?

helicoil for 3/8?get the kit from napa, drill tap and coils,about 30 bucks. if you keep the jeep more than likley will run into a stripped 3/8 bolt somewhere along the way.

 

broken,stripped or lost seem to be the only kind of bolts i get....

 

Helicoil was a success! I always get nervous tapping threads for some reason.

Now, do I use the gasket that came with the trans rebuild kit, or use some gasket maker? What will be better for leak stoppage?
