I have a 1980 CJ-5 with its original 151 Iron Duke, and its original SR-4 behind it. I'm just looking for restoration ideas to bring the engine bay looking back to factory.

Also, how many people are still driving on these motors? How reliable have yours been? What are some common problems?

I used to have a 1980 with the iron duke. It was as reliable as they come. Had quite a bit of power too.
This is a scanned picture of it from around 1990 parked next to my 71.

Great motor. If they have been maintained with regular oil changes they seem to run forever. Unfortunately they usually weren't maintained and had a really poor radiator which ended up overheating many of these. It used to be a great way to get a cheap set of 4.10 axles and the bellhousing from chev to T-4 was worth several hundred alone back before the Novak ones came out. As such these have always been sought after more to part out then to drive.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Oil leaking, rod knocking GM engine. AMC always got screwed with these late V6 and 4cyl engines.
I could write a book about all the problems we had with these engines in Jeeps.
It kept the service bays full and the mechanics busy, especially the oil leaks.
They leaked oil the day the transport dropped them off on the lot.
The 151 had a noisy valve train and bottom end.
Pontiac Puke is what I called them.
Saw a 151 in a Scrambler puke the camshaft out the block at 7K miles.

    I would never own a Jeep vehicle with a 151 or 173.
    But....that's my opinion.
