I get a kick out of these discussions, I also get confused. I don't like change so I stay close to original. New mechanical fuel pumps are not expensive, I have them on both my motors and no problems.

I agree. 20 bucks here, local. Dont fear change though

I don't fear change, it is just easier to stay original for me. I don't want to complicate things for myself, too old.

    Yeah.
    1. I put in an electric fuel pump.
    2. I put in new wires.
    3. Put in my spare coil.
    4. Checked every vacuum leak/area possible.
    5. Check lash on new pushrods.

Found that 2 of the cups broke off, the other 2 were welded to the arms.
Put my old pushrods back in. Ran right as rain. I hate foreign manufactured garbage, but its the time i live in.

All that overlow in the orange sealant concerns me. If you use silicone, be sparing - a loose gob in an oil passage could be bad news…

Thats what my buddy said too. Small dab this time around.

Cool. Personally I feel safer with an old fashioned #2 Permatex.

I put Permatex on the cover and nothing on the head, that way you can remove the cover and not tear the gasket. Cork gaskets should work without a lot of glue. Works for me.

I keep wondering how the heck those pushrods could have failed like that, and in such a short time, even if they are imports. Peened flat, and/or "welded" to the rocker????

Do you think they are getting enough oil?

Just plain, old fashioned, cheap garbage. When i ordered 4, and one came arrived with a broken cup, i shoulda looked elswhere. Upon examination after the fact, it appears the cup end of the pushrod wasnt large enough, so that when the motor started up, the ball on the rocker end side became a forcefit application, and when it lifted back up it sheared the cup from the rod.
These new ones are spot welded or something. The originals are one solid piece.

Now i just need to decide....keep the new electric fuel pump i installed, or go back to the original one i accused of being faulty

What kind of pump did you go with? Is it one of those little chatter boxes like in Howard's post (#6)? If so, I'd personally keep it. Like was stated, they're reliable and readily available on the odd chance of failure. I've been running one of them in my 3B for 20 years with no issues.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe they are straight-through when turned off. (I do know mine is below my fuel level and will gravity-drain my tank through it if disconnected.) You could try leaving it in place as a backup. If your manual pump fails, just switch on the electric pump. (You may have to bypass the manual pump? Not sure if you can push fuel through it. I've never tried that.)

You can push fuel through the mechanical pump. The only problem would be if the diaphragm was leaking fuel into the engine. The electric pump would fill the crankcase with fuel pretty quickly.

Good point. Don't do that. :D

Idk without looking offhand. Bought it off ebay for an old bolens riding mower. (Some people call them lawn tractors....i refuse)
