Timing Marks On The Pulley

another one fast question,
i tried to timing my engine with the timing light.The marks are on the engine side good.But on the pulley they are a lot of marks and hits.I know that there is a small hole on the center of the pulley.Is this supposed to be in line with the timing mark on the pulley?i want to make a new good painted one.

p.s i think that a previous owner didnt install the oil pump correct,i have some problems timing it.to remove the pump and install it correctly i have to remove steering box?

mine is the f-134 double pulley

 

M38A1, should be a notch on the rim, nearest the engine. See if that is present, in line with the hole. Cleaning helps, and due diligence.

Take out Number One sparkplug, stuff your finger in the hole. Rotate the engine by hand. When that cylinder puffs, you should be near TDC.

 

there are a lot of hits and notches in that pulley!!If it is in line with the small hole i will identify it and make it visible.

Here are some pics. However my Military TSM shows a hole on the inner face or shoulder of the pulley, on the engine facing side. YMMV

If you have a timing light, and a running engine, won't that get you close to seeing the right mark?

 

yes i have a timing light.I found a notch like this and tried to timing the engine with this as default.but very close is some more marks.So im asking if i remove the pulley on the inner face-shoulder there is a small hole.Is this in line with the timing mark???

 

Forget the hole. The timing marks should be on the edge closest to the timing cover on the pulley closest to the timing cover. The timing marks on the cover are (or should be) visible just above the pulley. Just like the ones shown in PeteL's pictures in post #5.

 

Don't know for sure about the hole - the TSM picture and text is ambiguous about it.

I would find exact TDC on the compression stroke of #1 cylinder with a flashlight or a stick, and go from there. Then file a big stinking notch in the pulley.

 

And mark that groove with white nail polish. That will really show up under the timing light, and will also seal the groove from rust-causing moisture.
