Fuel Problems, This Is Driving Me Nuts!

    I have been having this problem with my jeep. It comes and goes so I am having a really hard time figuring it out. For what ever reason, the fuel pump quits working. It is a new single action glass bowl pump from Walcks 4WD. I did have a bunch of junk in the tank plug the suction tube up, which I cleaned out.

    When it stops pumping, I have to pour some gas in the pump and a little down the carburetor. I usually have to do this 2 or 3 times before it starts pumping again. The gas cap vent seems to be working fine.

    When I rebuilt the engine, the cam lobe for the pump wasn't worn at all.

    So, do you guys think the fuel pump got wounded when the line was plugged up?

    Buy a Carter without glass bowl from rock Auto or somewhere. Those Chinese so-called reproduction units with the glass bowl are junk. The casting around the valves cracks and/ or breaks. The valve(s) can move around in their cast "seats" causing the pump to work sometimes, sometimes not. Went through this with two different pumps (both the same)

    Hmmm never thought of that. It is fine going down the road and always happens off road. My red jeep must have a good one, but it doesn't see off road. Guess I'll buy 2 and keep one around.

    On the OEM pumps, old gaskets under the glass dome can be trouble, causes a loss of vacuum if so. Easy fix.

    Interesting. I guess every so often they must make one that has some quality. All I had to do was bump one of my junk ones on the workbench and the valves fell out of position. I've got a couple of the Carter pumps you mentioned.....good quality there.

    I had the same problem with my 3b, added an electric down on the frame rail and never had the problem again.

    I just put the new carter in from rock auto. We'll see if that solves the problem. I'll know in a few days because the old one would drain the back if it sat for a few days. It did pick fuel up right away which was nice.
