How To Wire Sparton SCS-3R7 Turn Signal Switch On A V6 Cj5

After a good deal of trial and error experimentation with my brother-in-law on his 1967 V6 CJ5 earlier this week, we were finally able to successfully connect the NOS Sparton SCS-3R7 (7-wire) turn signal switch he just bought from DeBella Jeep Parts. The jeep recently had a new wiring harness from Walck's installed (which by the way is excellent!), but I believe the wire colors on the new harness match those of the original Kaiser Jeep wiring harness.

We put male bullet connectors on each of the Sparton switch wires, along with female bullet connectors on the two existing flasher output wires, which made the under-dash connections easier to deal with. We ran a separate dedicated ground wire connected with a spade terminal to one of the screws on the back of the turn signal switch housing (I'm not certain this was necessary, but we just wanted to make sure it wasn't an issue). Though it was optional since the old flasher was still working, we also installed a new Novita EL13 electronic flasher to replace the existing unit.

The turn signal unit works properly now, including the small flashing indicator light on the switch housing. Just thought I would share this info in case it might save others some time, as the correct connections are different than they are for the earlier SCS-3R unit.

The turn signal switch wires connected to the CJ5 V6 wiring harness as follows (the wire colors on the 4 cyl. or other Jeep vehicles' harnesses may or may not be the same):

Sparton SCS-3R7 Wire Color --- Jeep Wiring Harness Wire (and Color)

White --- Left Rear Turn Signal / Brake (Blue)

Red --- Left Front Turn Signal (Yellow)

Orange --- Right Rear Turn Signal / Brake (Orange)

Green --- Right Front Turn Signal (Black)

Blue --- Brake Light Switch (Brown)

Black --- Flasher Terminal marked "L"

Yellow --- Flasher Terminal marked "P"

(Note: Third flasher terminal marked "X" is for fused 12v input from ACC terminal on ignition switch)

I suspect that the new Walck wiring harness has a whole lot to do with the fact that everything electrical is working on my brother in law's jeep (including the turn signals). I have the same wiring harness on my V6 CJ5, and it is absolutely top-drawer quality. Carl Walck builds them himself, and does a fantastic job of it.

X2! I have one of Carl's harnesses on Tonk, worth every penny & more. :) It's not just that it fits, it's all the other stuff that it comes with like the connectors & bulb sockets.

Glad you guys think it was worthwhile to post this.

I only wish we'd had the information above in hand when we started trying to install the Sparton switch. It would have saved a lot of time and frustration!

This info has been posted many times in the past but may have gotten lost in the change-over. Doesn't hurt to have it again.

About your ground wire. It is highly recommended to do this as you have done. This gives a secure ground for the indicator light in the sparton housing. I usually run a black 18 or 20 gauge wire in the main harness up to the indicator bulb mounting screw.

Just found these Sparton switch installation instructions online, which agree with the above:

Does the 7 wire Sparton cancels the stop light when you flip the turn signal switch? I just rewired my CJ and the brake light overrides the flasher, not sure if my switch is malfunctioning.

    Thanks

Here's a really good explanation of how they work, or at least how they're supposed to work.

Yes it does. When you turn the indicator on for either a left or right turn, the rear tailight will blink accordandly. When you turn off the indicator, the taillight will go back to solid.

Didn't someone have a complete restoration thread on the Sparton ? I just received one and want it to have years of service before I have to remove it again.

I restored mine and have lots of detailed pics, but I don't have any verbiage written to do a thread. Probably too many pics to upload directly (not thru a third party site)

A detailed tutorial type thread would be great.

Now that I think of it, I did post a thread on my restore. Should have been early this year.
