    BTDT.

I usually grind a cut/slit then bust it with a chisel.

Yep that's how I do it. ............... except in this case, the new bearing has already been installed.

I know, but I have to ask...Are you sure you can't slip the backing plate over the bearing? I can't tell from the pic or remember mine.

nope the backing plate is part on the bearing retaining setup, and the hole it 1/4" smaller than the bearing.
I did entertain the idea of making the center elongated my 1/8" on each side and twist the plate off and flip it. But I was worried that might cause problems, so I just cut the new bearing off and ordered another bearing kit.

I went from some old 33" Remington Mud Brutes to BFG All Terrains it is so nice having new quiter tires. However when I am driving now I hear every other noise.

Installed a completely new Bestop soft top with 2 part doors. The old top was damaged by the PO using an SOS pad to remove tree sap from the vinyl windows. Nice to see clearly out again.

Beachbum we need to see more pix of the top install. Did the snap locations change?

    Sorry for the late reply...
my jeep had an old Bestop soft top already (from the 80's?) so everything was a direct replacement. The jeep still has the hole locations from the original top but the Bestop does not use a snap connection for their tops. Only snaps used are on the tailgate, if it's a 55-71. The kit comes with a rail for the other type of non opening tailgates.

    Took the old powerplant out:

And mounted the front end from a newer cj ( making room for the new engine/trans combo)

Once the new engine and suspension are mounted, the frame-off resto will start!!

I guess there's not a soft top made now that utilizes straps on the rear that fasten to the tailgate footman loops...(?) Would be ultra cool if there was though.

Aha, what you have newly installed is the Bestop Supertop, and not the Tigertop which still uses snaps, right?

Yes I bought the Supertop. It sure would be cool to find a vintage top!

The old 3b is tired and severely incontinent. I'm pulling the engine for the first time in 17 years to clean it up, replace all the gaskets and seals, adjust the valves and put in a new (dry) clutch. This jeep is an ex-racer; the engine compartment is a quagmire of tubing, and all the fasteners are in with red loctite. :susp: Removal wasn't enjoyable.

Trust me. It's killing me! But if I don't do this, I won't have a plow rig this winter. This is about 5 years overdue.

I feel your pain, started with a simple frame replacement and creep set in,11" brakes, sag steering, rear fuel tank and then decided to put a better body on that came with a pile that followed me home, and of course the right floor board was ratty so panel and supports are now on the way,but its only getting "Chassis Saver brushed on", warts and all.....I swear!!

In the late '80s my washer fluid bag sprung a leak. I have now replaced it. Took 30 years to get around to it. And by the way an electric pump is MUCH better than the old manual pump system.
