What Did You Do To Your Jeep Today?

Jon B. Retired three times; still working.

Today, about half of the rear brake conversion - 11” self-adjusting - was completed on the Willys wagon!

The backing plates came from a salvage yard in Pennsylvania, complete with shoes & hardware. I used the durable bits but bought new springs, cylinders, shoes and drums from O’Reilly Auto (20% on-line discount and free next-day delivery!!).

Two-piece axles are a pain in the rump! Still have to hang the new pedals, install the master cylinder and make (& buy) new lines…

Just about done with the TC rebuild. Thanks Nickmil for the shims.

So glad I wasn’t doing this under the Jeep. I thought I had it right, then when I bolted on the flange it went way loose.

Got the YJ restarted today. New battery cables, battery, serpentine belt, idler pulley bearing, plugs, wires, cap rotor, and valve cover gasket. Starts better but still idles rough.
Found a sizeable crack in the exhaust manifold, and fuel pressure is sitting at 20 psi. It should be 31 at idle, or 39 if you unhook the FPR. Unhooking the FPR made no difference. So will be ordering a new manifold this payday and troubleshooting the fuel pressure issue.
Theres also a constant rattle that MAY be the timing chain hitting the cover. Or the second idler pulley bearing, stethoscope shows the noise in both areas but they're really close together. Ive got a spare idler pulley bearing so Ill try that first before replacing the timing chain.

Last time I had a cracked manifold I picked the cracked part off the ground and welded it back on.

Apprently welding doesn't help much on these 2.5 manifolds. A new one is 60-80 dollars. I'm just going to pickup a new one and replace it.

Finishing up my TC rebuild. Installed front driveshaft with new (proper) yoke on the D30. Lube in the transmission, TC and topped off both difs. Grease into most of the fittings. Installed the transmission crossmember/mount. I think the skid plate is the only thing left to do.

….that and pray it doesn’t leak to bad. :waiting:

Installed the flywheel and clutch on the 302, and bolted up the NP435. This'll be going in the 49 willys pickup soon.

Nothing serious yesterday, no pictures. Replaced the fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, left engine mount, which came off in two pieces, and the other idler pulley bearing which was like it was rotating on sand, this did not fix the rattle, so the timing set will be getting replaced, and finally changed the oil and filter, the filter was marked with a 2014 manuf date so no idea when it was changed last. The FPR and filter did not fix the pressure issues but did at least fix the fuel leak down problem, so the FPR was bad. I dropped an order for a fuel pump, timing chain set, exhaust manifold ect. I'm working extra this weekend, but should be able to get some of it done Sunday and part of next week. I think I'll go ahead and drop the tank Sunday.

Wrapped up the hard top project. Ran a few hrs today. Its quieter than the soft top. Some wind noise, I think after some sound deadening inside it will be really nice. Wish we'd get a decent snow. A watershed run in the hardtop with the heater on should be really nice. Time to get after reinstalling the winch and front locker. IMG_20230128_144511981.jpg

Since the unheated portion of my shop is around 3*F today, I’m working in the (barely) heated room. And, since there are no drive-in openings, all I can do is smallish stuff…

It’s the wiring harness off the 5.3 I bought for the CJ5. Now I understand why vendors want $700 for a custom harness! What a pain to sort through all the wires.
