I haven’t driven the CJ since we got home from Colorado. (It’s still a 5cyl).I installed a new Pertronix and neatened up the wires over the weekend. Surprised it didn’t start right up. Tested the coil and that seemed to be the problem. Up to the FLAPS and new coil did the trick.

Put some air in the tires too.

I was never convinced we found the smoking gun there. Just knew we changed enough parts until it ran.

I'm here to report back on the thump, thump, thump noise. Last Saturday I welded the front spring brackets it place. Predictably, that had no effect on the thump, thump. I crawled underneath the jeep to take another look at the drivetrain. I noticed the pinon end and transfer case end of the driveshaft weren't clocked exactly the same. The two-piece driveshaft looks like it was assembled one spline off. I took the driveshaft apart and put it back together so the two ends lined up. Did that fix the thump, thump? Nope. Maybe the slight mismatch of angles at the pinon and transfer case were to blame? ITLKSEZ suggested putting the rear end on jack stands and taking a look with the jeep running. I jacked up the rear of the jeep and put my recalled Harbor Freight jack stands under the axle. I put chocks on both sides of one of the front wheels. I double checked (by twisting the free front driveshaft) I wasn't in 4wd before starting the jeep, putting it in 1st gear, and letting out clutch. The rear wheels started spinning and the jeep didn't jump off the stands and crash into the vehicle in front. I got out of the jeep and looked at the spinning driveshaft underneath. There was no thump, thump and nothing appeared to be out of round or vibrating. ITLKSEZ suggested disconnecting the front driveshaft. I disconnected the front driveshaft at the differential and zip-tied it up to the frame. I took the jeep for a test drive and no thump, thump. The jeep ran smooth. Could the Lock-o-Matic hubs be malfunctioning?

My front driveshaft makes a thumping noise when going anywhere from ~5-30 mph. Well, really it's a clattering noise because there's some play in it and the front output bearing on the D20 is shot.
How are the splines on your driveshaft? Front output bearing in good shape?

I’m still curious how many thumps you hear per tire revolution. One, or maybe two per tire rotation puts the thump in your front axle shafts, u-joints or hubs. [Axle ratio] times per tire revolution puts the noise inboard, either in your front driveshaft joints or spline, or in your t-case, but the fact that that would be spinning at all in 2wd tells us your Lock-o-matic hubs are locking when they shouldn’t be, and the front wheels moving forward is turning the front driveshaft. No matter what the noise is, those hubs might have an issue.

While the shaft is still detached, lift the front end and have a partner spin one tire forward while you spin the other. If you hear the noise, congrats, you narrowed it down to the front axle. If not, hook up the driveshaft and try again. If you hear the noise now, it’s either the driveshaft or t-case. Without the engine running, it should be easy to pinpoint the location of the noise.

If you can’t recreate the noise, sell the jeep. It’s haunted.

Been too busy with a large project at work to really do anything with the Jeeps during the last week. Had some time tonight to catch up on a couple fiddly things on the '69.

    1) The backup lights I just got working, weren't.

Figuring the plug fell off the switch, I pulled up the floor plate. It was fine, but had no power going to it. Checked the fuse and it looked fine. Turns out the plug was loose on the back of the ignition switch. It seems like I didn't plug it in all the way. The lights are working again now.

    2) More tuning of the Spartan turn signal I also recently installed.

First, I had the rubber wheel pressed too tightly to the steering wheel. It deformed and wouldn't roll. I loosened it up to where I twas just touching about a week ago and it was rolling fine. However, it would put the turn signals on while you were tuning the wheel. At little dab of grease on the spindle seems to have solved the problem. Not enough friction to activate it when turning, but enough to cancel it when the signals are on.

There was also some looseness of the stalk so I dug though the washer selection and found one perfect to shim it. It seem to be working great now.

So I don't embarrass myself, I won't tell you how I let the spring shoot across the grarage and how I had to look for it on my hands and knees.

And its back in. Hopefully it wont be an automated undercoating device this time. Continuing with the annual deep clean I scrubbed the top with cleaner abd applied the conditioner. Other than my drivers door window it's hanging tough for a 1987 model.
Used the boat wax and polished up the gelcoat. IMG_20210903_164603974~2.jpg

I finished the Ford Mustang 5.0L HO rebuild and bolted it in the highly modified 56 CJ5 frame with the Land Rover axles and coil springs.
Then I bolted up the Ford RUG 4 speed trans and Dana 18 T Case.
    Mounted the headers and starter.
Then started fitting up the Land Rover Drive Shafts. I used rear Drive flanges front and rear on the Dana 18 since they are the same bolt pattern as the Land Rover.
Rear Drive line angle looks good. Not too steep, or short. Wheel base got streached from 81" to 93" Coil Springs and Disc Brakes on all 4 corners.

Thankfully the D18 doesn't leak (yet) tested at speeds of 60mph. I bolted up the skid plate.
29 tooth 6 spline overdrive in the shopping cart, trying to decide between it or seats. The Corbeau Moabs are killing me.
