I would think you should be able to rent a trailer then.

If it was me I would trailer it, the biggest reason is the truck doesn't have enough brake to stop both vehicles, most dollies don't have brakes. I pulled a tandem axle trailer a lot with my 88 Comanchee 4.0 L. And had plenty of power to pull it with all sorts of vehicles on the trailer. You can probably stop it a few times but you will likely rapidly overheat your brakes and warp your rotors in short order. I would be worried about the Jeep as well if you don't know its condition well the wheel bearings, front end, tires and suspension could deliver some nasty surprises that you don't want on the road.T.J.

Yes. This is what i wanted to do when I moved from Washington state to Washington D.C. My issue was that I didn't have access to a loading dock on either end. I agree with the trailer being the best bet with an unknown jeep.

Car dollies work nice until you have to back up, not recommended.

U hail will rent to 1/2 ton trucks. Avalanche is 1/2 ton and did it twice with not issues renting.

  8. We have rented a u haul trailer with a Nissan ext cab 4x4 truck. Like others have said the trailer is heavy! You may want to contact the u haul lots directly and not rely on the Internet.

I have a 1/2 T F150 with a 3.5 V-6. I rented U Haul's trailer two times: to haul my CJ6 to Bridgeport OR Park and to bring my DJ5 from Joplin, MO to TC, TX. I agree that you probably need to go see them.

I also flat towed my CJ6 several times and it did much better than I expected.

Another option is to drive it and write a blog on this site. We all stayed up watching the last one.

When you factor fuel and trailer rental you might check on having it delivered.

How about purchasing an inexpensive trailer? Then you would have your own trailer when you get home...

All you need to know about getting a jeep home from Colorado to Florida is right there.. All you need is a spot gps tracker and your good to go..,

    Glad we could help :D

FYI I have towed a honda civic with a tow dolly with my xj.. Did not even know it was there.. Don't know if the civic is close to the weight of the cj.

A trailer WITH BRAKES is a big advantage when things get hairy.

Tow dollies are a pain, they are so wide you have to be on your toes all the time, and you can't back up, they jackknife right away. Would it be possible to put it on a two wheel trailer, at less than 2500 lbs it wouldn't have to be that heavy of a trailer. A stock Jeep with stock small wheels and tires is pretty narrow and not very long. I have seen two wheel custom trailers here in Michigan with Jeeps going to club trail events. Just something to think about.

Not sure about your path, but from Buena Vista via US24 you only have the climb up from the valley and then the short west climb (but steep) over Wilkerson. Breaking will be your main concern coming down as it can be very deceptive until the thing your towing starts shoving you around.

Your best bet will be a trailer. Around here we have things like All Tool Rental and Bills Tool Rental where you can get flatbed trailers by the week or hour. That and some good tie down straps or chains and binders will be the best way.

If you want - reach out to me and I should be home (just east of Colorado Springs) and could help you if you need something local.

Warloch, Thanks a lot for the offer. May take you up on it at some point. Nice to know there is local help available.

The UHaul mystery i think is solved. On the uhaul site the default hitch rating is 1000 lbs. Since my truck has a towing capacity of 5500 lbs I changed the hitch rating to 5000, and voila, I can use a trailer. The odd thing is that every hitch rating I have ever seen is measured in hundreds of pounds and uhaul rated them in thousands of pounds. Example, if you wanted to tow 5000 lbs you needed a hitch rated / tounge weight at 500 lbs. The next mystery is, I went looking on the hitch for a rating. I found nothing. I expected it to be stamped somewhere on the hitch, nothing. When I got the truck, there was a sticker with but that is long gone. So, I am assuming, and we all know what that means, since I have a 5500 lb towing the factory would put at least a Class 3 hitch (up to 5000 lbs) on the truck. And to answer an earlier question, yes it hangs off the frame.

Garage Guy, I was a lurker when ITLKSEZ had his adventure. He has a pair of freakin BASKETBALLS!!!! And a lot of skill and knowledge. The only I way I would try that is if I could hire a tow truck to follow me home. That said, that was one heck of a story.

See if your owners manual says the hitch rating. Chances are the rating is with the hitch you have on the truck, frame mounted are the strongest, that's why I asked about that. Hitch rating can be confusing sometimes.

Yeah, trailer is the best, I'm glad you can get one. No way I would do the trip that was discussed, under those conditions. Double no way with an F-head. :)
