Skid Plates

I am not surprised that the military plate is larger. More protection. Also would not be surprised if it is thicker than civilian counterpart.

Don, the one that came with the T98, is it from an FC model ?
Seems to me the FC skid plates were larger and wider.
Do you know where the T98 came from and what vehicle ?

 

yea you're right, one or the other, or maybe both.

 

I have a T-98 in my '62 CJ-5 with a D-18 xfer case. My skid plate is the one on the left. The holes not only allow access to the T-98, but also to the drain plug, etc. for the D-18. It is a large skid plate. I was surprised by the size. The whole thing was very heavy when I pulled it for rebuild. The tranny alone weighs 245 lb. I don't know what the D-18 weighs, but I pulled the whole thing at once, and the skid plate actually came in handy, keeping the thing flat on the transmission jack. Make sure, if you ever pull it, that you have your Jeep a ways in the air. By the way, the T-98 is a top shifter. There is a miserable little hardened pin that you have to pay a lot of attention to when you pull the shifter. It is on the right side. If you are not careful, you can drop it into the tranny. Mine is worn and I need to replace it. I had a very hard time finding the pin, but a place in Logan, Utah, where I was born and raised, has top end kits for the T-98 and this pin is in that kit. The place is Novak Conversions and the kit is $25 out the door. Hope this helps anyone who has the T-98. I really like this tranny.

 

For what its worth, the FC150 with a T90 sideshift is nearly identical to the M38a-1 plate. One or two of the center holes are elongated, but otherwise the same.
