Holley 1909 on the 258 straight 6

    When I acquired my 74 cj5, it had a fairly new (or very recently installed, not run for long) Holley 1909. There is a small maybe 1/2 to 3/4 spacer between it and the stock intake manifold. It does have long ago installed headman hedders leading to a pair of collectors which has a pair of pipes meeting a y collector to a very cherry bomb like muffler then exiting back driver corner under the tail light. The carb has the stock air filter housing mounted.

    I don't know squat about picking an appropriate sized carb for an engine application but I am very capable of disassembling, rebuilding, etc carbs.

    Most of what I read online, and there is not very much on this carb, seems to point towards it being OEM for straight sixes of smaller displacement Fords from the 60's. Should I be searching for a weber or Motorcraft replacement? Main plans for the jeep are a Sunday driver with the occasional forage toward light trails (deer lease, Uwharrie) and a couple trips to some remote beach front fishing spots. I would be shocked if it saw more than a few thousand miles a year driving.

    You have headers - do you want to keep them? Do you have a 1V intake manifold? Do you want to keep it?

    As 1Vs go the factory Carter YF is fine. If you upgrade to a 2V, I'd suggest the later aluminum 2V manifold. IMO all you gain is a different carburetor when you put a 2V on a 1V manifold.

    1v on there currently. Will the factory carter have better cfm than a 1909?

    Hard to say. By better you mean more? Typically the size of the carburetor will be proportional to the engine it's used on. CFM is used as a marketing tool for aftermarket carburetors, and isn't provided for factory carburetors.

    The 1974 model 258 is not the best of the bunch, as far as I am concerned.
    The 78 I had would run circles around the 72 and the 75 I had, as well as getting
    better gas mileage, even with the Carter YF.
    If you're looking for some performance, let your wallet be your guide.
    A carburetor alone will not do it.
