What year did the CJ transition from a rectangular mirror like on a 72 to the mirror in this drawing?

Guess? 1974. I can check the parts book later.

Ok, the parts book only hints that the changeover was 1974. I know my factory-new 1973 CJ-5 back in 1973 came with the 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" rectangular mirrors, and my factory-new 1975 CJ-6 came with the 6 3/4" x 6 3/4" square mirrors, like in the picture above. The parts book says the square mirrors were available from 1974 on. The rectangular mirror was offered at least through 1980 on some models - I suspect for export.

    So, 1974.

The mirror change came about when Jeep went from the black windshield frame to the body-color windshield frame, which would have been
    around February, 1974.
Probably changed because they ran out of the old style mirrors.

The one I have is the 1974-1980 Jeep Factory Parts Catalog, which I got from BJ's. 1974-1980 Jeep J-Series Factory Parts Book - they will give you a modest discount if you are a member of IFSJA.org or fsjnetwork.com

There is a '74-76 book online at the Tom Collins site - JeepĀ® 1974-1976 Parts Manuals online - it appears that the illustrations are in the "Supplements" and the parts listings are in the sections above.

Thanks. BJ's doesn't seem to have the 1969 CJ5 parts book. Rock Auto offers a loose leaf version for $50. 'Sounds like a reasonable price vs. BJ's.

My 74 had the square one. And only on the left side. Right side was probably an option.

Yes. The option list was long. Even the passenger seat was an option.
