I used it on the mating surfaces, used a putty knife to remove it. then wiped it all down after the paint cured.

not sure about parts you're not disassembling, just realized that. but it might be good to pull the timing cover, inspect and such...

The vaseline? You can wipe off any overspray on vaseline with a rag. Any grease will work. Paint the machined surfaces with grease and spray away. Then wipe off before assembly.

If you take the water pump and timing cover off, you'll need new gaskets. Don't break any bolts.

Good tip on the Vaseline guys! (y)

That's it...No special tools or sequence? Can I remove them both as one piece or should I separate?

I'd think you can remove as a unit. No hands-on exp with a 225 though.

Timing cover seal will probably be ok, but I'd replace it. If you are in there, consider a timing set. Any chain slop --> replace.

I left mine in the engine bay and painted the block, valve covers, and transmission as well as transfer case. did all primer first, well degreaser, wire brush, more degreaser pressure washer, and scotch pad then primer. taped off transmission then spayed block. then taping off block to paint transmission and transfer case. then moving to front of engine. taping off block and using small sprays with natural gray look to blend in with original so anything behind the pump will not be seen anyway. but I am trying not to remove anything because if its not leaking or broke then why fix it. Ill try to get pictures up here but i always have trouble even after i read how to do it.

I painted my block with the covers on, then took them off , had them heat stripped and painted them and put them on with new gaskets, and bolts, makes it look detailed. There is a place by me, International Stripping, that does anything form whole bodies, frames, cabs and boxes. It was $50.00 for eight pieces off my motor, and they come back looking like new stampings. They have an E-Coat service, but that is costly, I had my hood stripped and E-Coated, because it is hard to paint inside the bracing, it was not cheap. You can clean up your motor with wire wheels and a drill motor, it really shines up the cast iron, and gets all grunge off.

If you leave the aluminum bare it will oxidize and corrode, looking like poo in a couple months. Paint it or clear coat it. I would not use vasoline as any grease around your painted surface will cause you problems. Also if you have silicone in the air or on any parts you have it will cause pockmarks in the paint. The best way to mask a part is to take auto or at least blue painters tape and apply to the part making sure to stick it to all the surface well. That surface needs to be clean of all dirt and grease. You then take a razor and cut the edge of where you want the paint to stop or start and take your hand masker machine and use that to cover the part in paper. the hand masker machine can be purchased at home depot or similar. it holds the paper and applied the tape to it as you pull it out. It is worth the money.

This was my initial intention but things are getting out of hand. o_O
It looks good after all these years (now that the grease is off)...Why will it oxidize now if it hasn't yet? I'll probably just make things easy and paint it all to match the block?

I broke out my DIY soda blaster...16lbs of store brand baking soda for $10. The bananas are for the wife. :)

Soaked in "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner...Then soda blasted.

Do you do anything to neutralize the soda?

All I know is that when I polished up some aluminum on my engine, alternator mount, in a couple months is was oxidized and had slight corrosion. If I had clear coated it, that would not have happened.

I use a vinegar soaked rag and wipe down the parts, then a watered rag for rinsing. I use the air compressor to dry the parts, then paint. ...Haven't had a problem yet...o_O

Ahh...I haven't polished them, just cleaned with de-greaser.

I guess I took it apart a lot more than I thought I would...The thread should be titled "Engine Painting w/o Disassembly Opening It Up". The only thing left to prep and paint are the valve covers. EVERYTHING else is cleaned and painted! (y)

Any opinions on the valve cover color? Same as the block or I was considering gloss black?

Dupli-Color "Pontiac Blue" DE1610...I love it and it was on the shelf locally!

For corrosion it depends on the alloy & climate.

As for shiny- aluminum will oxidize while you watch it (instant gratification for those used to watching water boil or paint dry :) ), probably your polishing compound had some wax that protected it for a bit but that doesn't last forever. :(
