1962 cj5 vin number ??

Heres a question, MY Title has a normal number style Vin number on it but my plates in my engine compartment has MD number as well as behind my pass. seat. what does the MD number? Military??

 

First off, what style of Jeep is it? My brothers M38 had a plate behind the passenger seat. The dash plates were pretty much unreadable and I belive it was titled from the engine number. He didn't know about the other plate and at this point, he's not going to screw with the system.

my title says 57548139868; the plate in the engine compt. says Willys MD 72760 theres another one next to it with a willys tag and that has 6 sets of numbers

 

Shaun, That MD prefix was used for the military M38a-1 Jeeps. The grill in your picture looks like it has the recessed headlights from an A-1. Does your body tub have a tailgate?
Most likely, your Jeep started out as a military A-1 , but got the title from a regular CJ5 from some previous owner due to missing the military title. That MD plate is correct for an A-1, and should match the numbers on the title. It might be easiest to buy a blank id/vin plate an have your title numbers stamped to match (though this is likely not legal)

Yes it has a tailgate. From what I read though the V6 were civilian options not military.

 

The MD plate is definitely from a military M38a-1 and those plates were mounted behind the seat. CJs have the tag on the upper drivers side firewall. Your title number begins with 57548 which indicates it is Willys (pre-'64) as opposed to Kaiser Jeep. Your serial 139868 is either a late '62 or '63. I can't seem to access the tables with all the vins since this site's format changed a little while ago.
The factory V6 didn't go into production until the later '65 model year. From the info you have supplied, it sounds like your Jeep has been cobbled together by previous owners, including the identity of that vehicle.
So you have a tailgate, do you have a raised "lid" on the cowl on the passenger side ahead of the windshield? This is an indicator of an early tub.
Also, there is a partial serial number stamped onto the frame on the top of the passenger side frame in the engine compartment. That may tell what this Jeep started out as.

I do have a raised cowl that is screwed on not welded that Serves no purpose. I will check the frame when I get home. I have a feeling the V6 was dropped in, but don't know. The plate behind the seat is completly unreadable I cannot post a pic of the tags for some reason, file too big it states.

Are your front spring shackles towards the front bumper end of the springs or towards the rear of the vehicle?

 

toward the rear, They are reversed

 

That's also a characteristic of an M38A1 (and only the first couple of years of CJ5 production IIRC unless someone modified it).

 

I know anything possible, but im thinking I have a M38a1 tub and frame with a v6 engine, where the title states Jeep Willys, but the yr must of came from the engine, possible a lost title so they used the engine?

 

the grill bolted with one bolt in center, shackles are reversed and mounted to frame, not pivot hangers. has raised cowl on pass. side but screwed in and serves no purpose. has tailgate and I removed the side spare tire mount. is there a way to look up the vin, so far couldnt find anything even on here. I was told from here it could be pre 64, but have no idea how to tell.

 

i haven't found one there yet, may look tomorrow maybe scrub some dirt off of it since the body is off the frame. But so far have not found any numbers on the pass. side of the frame. when I look I will let you all know.
