Alright so up in till today I had only driven my jeep in the neighborhood and worked out kinks from that. I took it on the highway and several problems came up. As I'm driving it I have her in third gear and it will only go to 45 and when I try to go past it will just slow done and constantly backfire. I started coming home and I'm going 30 ish in 2nd gear and try to shift to third and it won't go into position don't know why, it's the first its dine it. Next I park it and turn her off. I step out and *BOOM* I thought it backfired but the muffler actually ?literally exploded, it's blown to pieces, don't know why. As well the radiator was extremely hot and shot tons of water out. PLEASE HELP

For the muffler to literally explode, there had to be a ton of unburned fuel in the exhaust...your carb must be dumping excess gas.

What Doug said. Also check your timing, retarded ignition will cause it to run hot. You could also have one fouled plug that resulted in dumping raw fuel into the exhaust.

Yep. In high school we used to turn the ignition off and then on while coasting downhill, to make a huge backfire, scare the girls. But I destroyed a few mufflers under the "lifetime" warranty.
