Hurricane/F-head crankshaft pulley cracked

    Howdy All!

The crank pulley finally let go on my ol' willys and it got parked.
Bought another pulley right away and then let 'er sit without finishing the job.
It also had a bizarre howl that would intermittently go off and on from that area.
I'm hoping the "new" pulley will rectify that.

Been putting this off for years (literally) and am finally at a crossroads.
Life was real busy with 4 kids in their late teens/extended into their twenties in the house.
Now they are out, but now we are moving into a mobile home with (gasp) no garage.
So I have this "really cool" 44 MB that the kids say is "dope" but I am not sure about keeping, selling, fixing, etcetera.
If I could find a suitable new owner, that would prolly be the kindest thing to do for the little beast.
The trick is getting a suitable buyer AND a decent selling price.
Keeping it will be much more fun in the long run, and then I need to decide how much to fix and how best to shelter it.
Winters here get ugly for short periods but the NorCal foothills are pretty mild in comparison to other places.

So, if I replace the pulley, what other things should I do at the same time?
Timing cover seal comes to mind.
Pull the cover, and inspect the timing gears/replace 'em?
Who sells a good cover for a more or less stock MB?

    Thanks, Art

Ah, keep it. Tarp goes for $10. You have a nice set up there on the MB- not stock, but all bolt up and the Fhead and T90 are better units anyhow.

    Oh, you'll kick yourself!

Thanks Gunny, that's one of the things I've been mentioning to my dear wife. If I sell it, it'll be gone, I'll be sad, and if I were to want another one, it'd be pretty much impossible to find. Sure, maybe something kinda like it, but did you notice the patina? That took years! (Generations actually.)

I wouldn't sell that one... Maybe you can winterize it? A canvas top or an Arctic cab and a heater will do wonders... That way you can enjoy it all year round

Maybe you can use anti rust paint so it will be protected; I have

Maybe you can use anti rust paint so it will be protected; I have a F 134 and it is very strong.
For winter I have a hard top with doors (Meyer), no need to heater. It is enough protection, the engine is heating enough if you have good clothes.
What is important is to have doors to protect from cold wind. Maybe you can get canvas top with door, I don't know.
Put good oil, check oil lvel in transmissions, put grease where it must be, lot of places.
And again 20 years of pleasure.:iagree: WITH MYSELF.

My favorite thing with my M38A1 is the original OD on it so I understand about the patina on your MB. Cool that you recognize that.

You only have to keep the water/snow off of it. Your area is plenty dry enough (Rh-wise) otherwise to get by with just a tarp if need be.

Also, look into the permitting process in your county- often times, a structure under a certain square footage and especially if it's not considered permanent is not necessary to permit. That might allow you to cheaply build a simple carport to keep it under.

Thanks for all the heartfelt replies. So far responses to the CL add have been "nibbles" no one has committed to even looking at the MB in person. Bummer, maybe I'll be blissfully "stuck" with it. : )
Now, for fixing the pulley and timing gears. It is a gear driven camshaft right? No chain? Do they wear and need replacing? Or, am I perhaps just looking at replacing the seal, and pulley?

gear on the crank is steel, the cam gear is some sort of fiber thing. behind the crank pulley you may have some thin spacers. don't lose them, they set your thrust bearing clearance. If you are not missing teeth on the fiber gear, why replace?

edit your CL listing. your price needs to be around 28 million dollars to reflect true market value.

LOL, 28 million, gillion, dollars... True, for a priceless piece of history, machinery built by The Greatest Generation, the value is beyond describable.

BTW: Happy Veterans Day! And many thanks for all of your sacrifices, our nation is forever indebted to everyone who serves/ed. Amen!

Oh, and thanks for the input on the cam/crank gears and the warning about the shims. I'll pull the cover off and take a look but leave them alone if the look good.
