f134 exhaust valve removal

    Hey im new here. Anyway how should I go about removing exhaust valve / cam shaft on my f134 engine

    Start with getting a Factory Service Manual. Originals are better (better images) but repros are available.

    Welcome from the middle of Aridzona!

    Leave it sit until you have a service or repair manual.

    The head has to come off, and so do those plates on the driver's side of the engine. You will need gaskets for the head, the two side valve covers and the valve cover on the head. Also one for the base of the carburetor, if it tears when you remove the carb. (One of the head bolts is located under the carb). If you are looking to remove the camshaft, it is located in the block below the two side plates. You will have to remove the front engine cover and will need a gasket for this also.

    My chilton's manual says the engine has to come out to do all this.

    What is the problem you are having that you think you need to remove an exhaust valve or more?

    Ya i already have every thing stripped from the block and the only things left are CAM and valves I PULLING IT apart for 100% rebuild and I need every thing out so i can get it line board and acid dipped

    Don't lose those little valve keepers. If the spring gets loose it can shoot them out into the lawn.

    Watch your eyes when removing those valve keepers. Sometimes they have a tendency to fly out. And also, don't stick your fingers in the valve area when the valve spring compressor is compressing the valve spring. If you need to get something out, use a magnet. If that compression tool slips ( and it does quite often) and you have body parts in there they could get damaged.

    Can the exhaust valves be removed with the engine in jeep and exhaust manifold
    still on?

    Why do you think you need the block line bored? This is usually needed when swapping main bearing caps. Are you thinking instead of having the cylinders bored oversize?
    It may be better for you to take the block with cam and valves to a machine shop to have them evaluate the condition/tolerances with the proper instruments. More than likely, you will need to have the valves re-faced and seats reconditioned by a machine shop anyway. Just let them do the job properly.

    EDIT: I didn't relise the original post is 4 years old. In answer to Brad's recent question in post #10, yes an exhaust valve could be removed with the manifold in place, but its sure going to be a pain working behing the manifold. You must remove the exhaust valves via removing the tin lifter galley cover behind the manifold. I vote for removing the manifold to do the job more easily.
