Power steering issu

hi guy's i've been fighting this problem for a long time but now i don't know what to do. Last week-end i had to dissemble the front body and i dissenble both hoze that goes between steering box and P/s pump. Everything was working fine before dissemble. So after i put everything back on the jeep i did the Psc bleeding procedure couple of time without getting better. Here's what i don't understand. I have a hard steering but became smooth when engine rpm is around 2000-2500 rpm. At cold (first start in the morning) the steering is smooth too but after couple of turn is starting to get harder. Also when engine is at 2000-2500 rpm the pump is very noisy but steering is smooth...

I have a cooler installed couple month ago for the power steering.

Any idea what is the problem.

 

Perhaps you still have some air in the system............or your Pump may be going Out?

 

Hum the weird thing, when i don't use the jeep for couple of hour, for the 3-4 first minute i have lot of power on the steering but after that it decresing and i need to give more rev to the engine to turn the wheel.

 

Next time your out take a look at the oil Cold.............then in 3-4 minutes and see if it's foamed up? The pump may be cavitating the oil ( getting air from somewhere) and causing that issue. Air will compress but not at the same density as oil.........check your non-pressure return line and make sure there is nothing loose or broken where air can enter.

 

For the moment i did a complete flush....oil was black. I need to wait for the air to go out of the system now. Tomorow i'll double check for loose connection and i"ll do what you suggest me about cavitation.

As far as bleeding goes, remove the steering linkage from the pitman arm and then bleed it. If the knuckles are hitting the turn stops then you are not getting the complete range of motion from the gear and may not be completely bleeding.

No i didn't do it yet....i try it tonight but i still need to wait to tomorow because i can cleary see cavitation because i drove it to my father shop.

 

New pump on is way, i hope it will solve my problem!!!

 

New pump is on the jeep, seem to have solve the problem...but didn't take a ride is about -40 degree out here

This mornig was worst than yesterday, my chevy cavalier 2004 batterie's dead, my cj5 1975 with amc 360 starter in 3 second!!!

 

- 20 here didnt top single digits all day the jeeps started fine the late model injected other brands did not...

 

It got -18 here, the jeep :v6: started fine and got me around, nothing else would, Nice choice on the color of your jeep!

 

Ahah yeah, i didn't chose the color it came this way when i bought it, but i really love the color. Did you see the 2012 jeep Jk is having a similar color.

 

Yes I did, I thought it was pretty interesting, I painted this 0ne in 2006, there is one JK here in town I'll have to check the paint code on it to see if it's the same color, it looks close, I painted this one 1970 Hemi Cuda sublime green.

 

Ok problem is back, and i realy don't know what the problem is.

I was starting to lose force on power-steering before i swap out the new frame. So i was having the same problem as before...loosing power and finally having no more.

My big concern now, i may not have problem with the pump, i change 3 in four mounths. So with the new frame i was swapping the steering box for a scout one. When i put everything together i keep the pump that was supposed to be worn out, and everything work fine after couple bleeding. So i did about 4-5 ride without problem.

So last week end i had trouble with the return hoze, it started to leak and by the time i found the leak i was loosing all my power-steering force,i changed the hoze, try to bleed everything with the tire off the ground and i have no force at all. When i give throttle to make the pump run faster it's start to whine loud, even more when i try to turn the wheel.

Anybody have any idea?

I started looking for ram assist but there's must be something i don't understand here.

 

How old is the Steering Gear?.............Saginaw? The system is pretty simple.......if the pump works and the gear does not change out the gear.........sounds like the gear might have an internal issue , among the seals and bypass valving where by it is bypassing fluid to the return side prior to any work being done and then pressurizing your return line which should be under very little pressure back to the tank.............make sure you flush the system if you replace.

 

Saginaw pump on the jeep, saginaw gearbor from a scout 2, everything was working fine until my return hoze start leaking, i change the return hoze and did the bleeding procedure and there is no force.
Pump is 4 month old
Steering box has 3000 miles on it since last rebuilt.

I reed somewhere that the pressure relief valve could get stuck if there air trap in the pump, causing the pump to not being able to build pressure. I try to check that tonight.

 

Do you have an IR temp gage? Be interesting to see what temps you get at the pump. Your previous comment about black fluid sugests that pump was running way to hot and you may have gotten some debris in the system which lead to more problems. Adding a remote spin-on hydraulic filter to the return line may be a good investment. That also adds about a quart of fluid to the system which helps reduce temps.
