F-Head Air Cleaner and Carb Questions

I am new to this forum and CJ's but not Jeeps (late model). I just picked up what I was told to be a 1960 CJ5 F-Head with a solex carb. I am beginning the restoration project and have some questions that I could not get answered using the search function.

1.) I notice that some F-Heads have the vacuum line coming out of the area near the oil fill cap and "T-ing" with one line going to the valve cover and the other going to the oil bath. Mine does not have any place on the valve cover for this. My question is- Should my vacuum line only go to the oil bath? (see pic below)

2.) It currently has a small paper filter on the carb now and the vacuum line has just been hanging down along the engine. What should I do with the vacuum line in the mean time until I install a factory oil bath? (see pic below)

3.) Is there anything special that I need other than an F-Head horn, flex hose, and oil bath?

4.) The jeep runs almost perfect, however it does need the choke on about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way open. If I close it completely the engine immediately quits. I completely disassembled the carb, cleaned, and then reassembled with no difference. Could this be do to the air cleaner and vacuum line situation or could it be carb adjustment related?

    Thanks in advance!

IIRC that's not a vacuum hose, but part of an oil return/early PVC system. I would shorten it and put a bolt in it and a hose clamp around the bolt to plug it. Reconnect when you obtain an new oil bath air cleaner. I used to run a paper filter on mine and expect that you will be fine just capping the hose if you prefer.

    Beg to differ, Vanguard.

I agree that that isn't a vacuum line, per se. It does, however have a bit of vacuum to it.

That is a vent line that would run to the fitting on an oil bath. Mine has the same thing.

You can get small air cleaner filters that fit that. You need it because it is the vent for the PCV stuff. If plugged, it will cause problems.

On the engines for the CJ's the valve cover did not have a vent fitting in them. The engines for the pickups and station wagons with the F-134 did have them.

Can some one tell me what that gizmo is towards the front in the third picture?
I have never seen that before in any of the pics or illustrations.

That is the factory plow pump and valve setup that is currently running my 6' 4 way western plow. It works great too!

Thank you for the replies and clarification! Much appreciated!

The Solex carbs are good but they hate dirt!!!! you say you cleaned it but my bet is there is still some dirt somewhere in one of the passages. I had one do the same thing on me. I went back to the carter since then. They are much more forgiving and I personally think the carter runs better in colder weather.

My 62 has the same set up as yours. filter it and you will be good to go.

Do you still have the PCV valve on the left side of the engine with a metal tube going around the front of the engine and up to the intake in the head just below the carb? That sucks a wee bit of the crank case fumes out and reburns them through the intake and back into the cylinders. It does create a wee bit of suction and that is why that hose should not be plugged. You need to either re-install the induction system oil bath filter, crossover pipe and associated plumbing or stay with your paper filter and attach a small engine style inlet filter element to the the end of that hose and clamp the end of the hose a little bit high than the nipple on the oil filler pipe either on the engine or the firewall. Here's an example of what I set up for a guys M38A1 a few years ago. http://willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules/gallery/albums/Wes-Knettle/DSCN0112.sized.jpg .

The Solex choke system is a bit unique in that it does not block air like the original jeep's Carter did. It actually increase the lo speed circuit fuel flow. It's actually called a start system and not a choke. Do a little research on these two sites: Solex Carb Tips on The CJ3B Page

and download this copy of the instruction sheet for your

I hope you still have an oil filter which looks like it was displaced by the hydraulic pump kit.

The PCV valve is exactly how you describe with one exception. The line "T's" at the left front area of the engine with one leg going up to the intake area and the other has a rubber hose that has a plug clamped in the line. Are there any how to's for cleaning the PCV valve? I have purchased an oil bath, duct work, and air horn from another member that will be installed once it is received. Do you know of any links for oil bath maintenance or is it pretty straight forward?

I have disassembled the carb for the 3rd time now. I have soaked, sprayed, and scrubbed every part the best that I can. I am not sure it can get any cleaner inside or out. There is still no difference. I am unable to completely close the "start system" at idle. I can close it at any other throttle position without issue, which would make sense with it only controlling the low speed circuit. I am not new to carburetors but this truly has be stumped.

The oil filter is still there, and is mounted on the left front fender. This seems to be where they were all relocated for early cj's with this setup, from the pics and local cj's that I have looked at.

Thank you for all the information and links, it appreciate it!

I failed to mention that it does have an electric fuel pump and updated inline filter from NAPA that the PO installed. The original mechanical pump is still all there. I am unsure of the status of the pump (assume that it does not work). I am also unsure if the arm is still attached. I would like to purchase a new mechanical pump. Are the Omix Ada good replacements? I want to go be as original as possible with this project.

My '55 and '56 both have a vent fitting off of the valve cover (it is seen in the owner's and service manual for '55 as well), but the '63 owner's manual does not have one in the diagram, also some of the valve covers have the large vent (inverted, flat topped cone)which does not not attach to anything but I don't know the years of application, have seen them on cj3b's.
