Advice wanted

    You could swap in the 302-but it's not gonna be free. You're gonna have to adapt it to the trans, buy motor mounts, adapt throttle linkage, cooling system, hoses, brackets, wires, etc. etc. etc.

    The only thing I have to buy is the clutch, I have a *running* 302 Ford with a T-18 with SBF Ford Bellhousing bolted to it right now. I've already ordered and paid for the T-18->D18 Adapter, so that isn't a factor into this cost. And between my own meager fabrication skills and the damned good fab and weld guys that work for me, motor mounts aren't a problem. Throttle linkage is something any shadetree mechanic *should* be able to sort, the stock radiator, after being at the rad shop, tested, cleaned, is well within what a 302 wants to see, and the inlet/outlet are right where they need to be, and my 302 as it sits right now has a 90-ish amp 12SI and a saginaw P/S pump already mounted and lined up.

    So far, based on the posts I've read, I would be a damn fool to put the V6 back in this Jeep.

    Just adding to your list of mods......cutting down grill and fabbing new rad mounts.....drivelines will need to be shortened/legthened.......tub will need some mod and new tranny cover in tub.....exhaust system.........people will give their opinions because you asked, but ultimately you need to do what makes you smile :)..........I love my sbf now that it's a done deal

    Oh, in the grand scheme of things, I think Ford built some of the greatest motors that were ever built. But I did ask for opinions, and so far, from what I've been reading, dropping the Ford in it is winning out over rebuilding the Dauntless. And let me just clarify, I wasn't, and still am not unhappy with the power output from the dauntless before it sucked that bit of the air cleaner hold down into #1. I would *love* to go back together with the 225, but the more I look at it, I just don't see it being cost effective.

    No, my mind still isn't made up, that's why I asked, so far, based on the comments on this thread, I don't see a downside to dropping the 302 in my Jeep, other than the fact that, near as I can figure, I do have the original motor, and I really am a fan of doing what you can to keep things original, looking at Cost vs Benefit, I don't see how keeping the 225 is all that great a deal. I'm not disrespecting, I just haven't seen a convincing argument to keep the 225.

    Well you asked for opinions If it were my Jeep I would keep the 225 but, My reasons may not be yours. How I drive my jeeps is short road trips ( less than 100 miles and wheeling. In my opinion Jeep engines are better for all things being equal Within my use parameters. I have seen a lot more Jeeps with SBC SBF overheat on long slow hill climbs than I have AMC 304s same goes with 4.3 liters vs 225 or 258 6 cylinders. If I used my jeep for commuting, or blasting around in sand dunes or mud I would lean toward the 302. hope that helps.

    I would do the 225, and now that I have gotten a working FI setup, I have dumped plans to look into the 4.3s. To me, while I like V8s, they are not worth the extra effort required to fit one in a rig, when the V6 just 'fits'.

    YMMV - etc...

    This thread has certainly grown some legs! Patrick, to answer your question, I have spent no time behind the wheel of a properly running 225 powered jeep, I did however spent about 3-4 years behind the wheel of a properly running 225 powered car. The harmonics of the odd fire engine drove me nuts; perhaps in a vehicle such as a jeep the vibration is masked somewhat by other dynamics occuring in an off road type vehicle. My comment to the OP was that Buick has made improvements over the years (decades really) in developing their V6, and in my opinion and experience a later version would be preferable.
