    Hey all-
I have a new-to-me CJ with the 4 cylinder and have only had it a short time. It idles and runs fine, but occasionally when giving it a lot of gas while the rpms are low it will cut out like it's going to die, then pick up running fine after letting off the accelerator. My initial thought is maybe it's starving for fuel? Tomorrow I'm going to try loosening the gas cap to see if it's not venting. Any other ideas on how to find the problem? Thanks

maybe accelorater pump on the out side of the carb, the diaphram may have a hole in it?? its a easy check. years ago I had similar issue, and the diaphram was the culprit. partially plug fuel filter? Im not the best engine guy though.

Accelerator pump, time to rebuild the carb. It looks like you have a kink in your upper radiator hose, might want to check that.

OK so kaiserwillys has a complete rebuilt Solex carburetor for $144.99. I've never messed with carbs before. Is it a simple replacement, or do you have to adjust a bunch of jets, etc. after the switch-out?

Solex is pretty much a bolt-n-go, but the choke (fuel enrichment on a Solex) cable attachment point is 90* off from the stock carb. May need to reroute your cable for better alignment, or even get a longer cable.

More critical now. Today it died a couple of times when driving along in 3rd gear at low rpms. But it would stat back up. The last time it would sputter and run a few seconds then die. Then finally, RIP. Turns over and over but never would even cough.
    Old Jeeps are fun, yeah?

Have you pulled the fuel line off into a catch can and crank the engine to make sure you're getting enough gas?

Now this is just wierd. I took the Jeep in to the shop and left it for 10 days. Before I towed it in I tried several more times to start it- no sputter at all. Of course, the shop has been unable to duplicate it. It's started for them every time and they've even driven it with no stalls!

Hahahaha!!! Now doesn't that just blow! It never fails! So, did you ever think maybe too much fuel? These ol' iron beasts are pretty sensitive. ;)

I don't see how it could be too much fuel. After towing it home, I let it sit all afternoon and tried it again after it cooled off. Nothing. The next day after work I tried it again- nothing. Hooked it up to the truck and towed it up to the shop. Unhooked it and tried to start it- nothing.
Then they get in it the next day- vroom.
    Wierd.

If they didn't adjust anything maybe problem wiring. Is it running for you after the shop still?

Still at the shop- they're still trying to get it to quit running!

You should go in and try to start it for them.
If it starts, say Thanks, and what do I owe you?
Then take it home and try again.
